Vikings take three titles on opening weekend of outdoor season

WAYNE, Neb.
- Augustana opened the outdoor track and field season with the women winning three events at the WSC Wildcat Classic and Paul Yak clocking a provisional qualifying time at the Raleigh Relays.
 
Carina Hofmeister blew up the women's 200-meter dash at the Wildcat Classic, nearly breaking a decade-old school record. The German sophomore took the title with a 25.49-second run.
 
Kayla Mescher doubled up on event wins, placing first in the women's 400-meter hurdles in 1:04.16 and running a leg on the 4x400-meter relay team. Mescher teamed up with Anne Parsley, Charissa Etrheim, and Colleen Everson for a 3:56.40 combined 1,600 meters.
 
Everson also turned in an impressive performance in the women's long jump, earning runner up honors. The senior from Slayton, Minn. recorded a best leap of 5.67 meters (18-7 ¼), just three centimeters short of a provisional qualifying mark. Katie Tonner took seventh in the same event with a best mark of 5.21 meters (17-1 ¼).
 
On Friday night, Yak opened his season at the Raleigh Relays in Raleigh, N.C. The junior ran a provisional qualifying 14:36.8 in the men's 5,000-meter run, placing third among Division II runners.
 
Jordan Slusser recorded the highest finish for the men at the Wildcat Classic, placing second, first among attached runners, in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:02.33.
 
A pair of Vikings notched fifth-place finishes in throwing events with one making his track and field debut. Anthony Huber made his collegiate debut and narrowly missed a provisional mark in the discus throw, taking fifth at 48.33 meters (158-7). Kristi Porter placed fifth in the women's javelin throw with a best mark of 37.53 meters (123-1).
 
Augustana's quartet of hurdlers each collected top-eight places on Saturday. Ryan Heuer led the way in the 110-meter hurdles, placing fifth (15.45 seconds) with Brandon Gildemaster right behind him in sixth (15.67). Zach Jones earned seventh in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 56.08 seconds and Jason Greenway took eighth in 56.31.
 
Kyerra Titus-Baer placed fifth in her 100-meter dash debut, clocking a 12.64-second run down the straightaway. Everson finished off her productive day with a seventh-place finish in the short sprint with a time of 12.83.

Christine Campbell and Alyssa Schmidt both recorded sixth-place finishes in field events on Saturday. Campbell cleared 1.50 meters (4-11) in the women's high jump and Schmidt cleared 2.90 meters (9-6 ¼) in the women's pole vault.
 
Parsley and Etrheim showed why they helped the women's 4x400-meter relay team, to ta tile on Saturday by earning top-eight finishes in the open 400-meter dash. Parsley placed seventh with a time of 1:00.59 and Etrheim took eighth in 1:00.68.
 
CJ Ham closed out the day for the Vikings, placing eighth in the men's shot put with a best heave of 15.14 meters (49-8 ¼).
 
Augustana returns to Sioux Falls, S.D. next weekend, hosting the Vance Butler Invitational at Howard Wood Field on Saturday, April 5.
