MINNETONKA, Minn. - Augustana cruised to their 13th straight win and earned a spot in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference semifinals with a 5-1 win over Minnesota State in the first round. The top seeded Vikings (22-1) advance to play Winona State tomorrow morning at 8 a.m.
The Vikings couldn't replicate their regular-season sweep of the Mavericks, but they still rolled to another win as they hunt their fourth straight NSIC Tournament championship. Augustana took two of the three doubles contests and notched double-bagel wins in the first three singles matches to finish to earn a spot in the semis.
Jenna Helleberg and
Meredith Lawrence recorded an 8-0 win at No. 3 doubles and
Katie Jesperson and
Jessa Richards made it 2-0 in the team score with an 8-3 victory in the first-flight doubles contest. Minnesota State (4-15) got on the board when their No. 2 pairing took down
Christine Olivo and
Heather Sullivan 8-5 in the No. 2 doubles match.
The Vikings then wasted no time in closing out the match once singles play commenced. Helleberg was first to earn her 6-0, 6-0 win in the No. 5 spot and Lawrence quickly followed with a 6-0, 6-0 victory of her own in the No. 6 singles match.
Jesperson then put the finishing touches on Augustana's 52nd straight win over a conference opponent when she rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 win in the No. 1 singles contest.
