BOX SCORE
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Augustana soccer team made a statement to the rest of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference on Sunday after it stunned 10th-ranked Winona State in a 1-0 shutout win at Morstad Field. The Vikings' record improved to 5-1 (3-0 NSIC), while the Warriors fell to 5-1 (2-1 NSIC) in the loss.
Augustana has now recorded four straight shutout victories – the second longest streak in team history --- during its current five-game winning streak.
Ashley Limmer took her game to a whole new level, recording a career-high nine saves. The Brandon, S.D. native made several incredible saves throughout the match, highlighted by a how-is-that-possible save in the early moments of the second half to keep WSU from getting on the scoreboard.
Samantha Tymkowicz scored the lone goal, her third of the season, in the match late in the first half on a crisp pass from
Samantha Arnold.
Both teams gave the fans a very fast-paced game, as both teams combined for 43 shots, 25 for the Vikings, and 18 for Winona State. Augustana's 25 shots were a new season high.
The duo of Tymkowicz and Arnold teamed up for the match's only goal in the 43rd minute of regulation. A good pass from Arnold put Tymkowicz in a prime spot about 15 yards out in the middle of the box. The former Bishop Heelan High standout then chipped one over the Warriors' Rachel Oleson and into the back of the net. Arnold was credited with her second assist of the year on the goal.
The Vikings' defense took care of business from there, shutting down attack after attack that WSU made the rest of the way.
Limmer, in her best performance of the season so far, kept Augustana out of trouble in the second half with her ability to making several great stops throughout the half at key moments.
The senior goalkeeper's dramatic saves, combined with the Vikings' relentless effort in the final 45 minutes, were simply just too much for Winona State to overcome, losing 1-0 and dropping its first match of the season.
Augustana returns to action next weekend as they take to the road to face MSU Moorhead and Northern State.
