MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Augustana men's and women's cross country teams had a strong showing at the 29th annual Roy Griak Invitational, hosted by the University of Minnesota with both teams taking home second-place honors Saturday afternoon.

"I felt this was a solid opener for our cross country season. Although we raced in the Augustana Twilight, this was our first true test of the season." Head Coach Tracy Hellman said. "There were some good things that happened, yet there is much more room for improvement. Anytime you can come away from this meet with a trophy, it was a good day. Both teams realize that we must improve, and we are focused on doing that in the next six weeks until the conference championship."

The Augustana women's team took second place on the Les Bolstad Golf Course Saturday morning. The Vikings were led by two freshman, Leah Seivert and Annie Kruse. Seivert turned in the best performance for Augustana with a third-place finish. clocking a time of 22:22.6, followed by Kruse finishing sixth at 22:28.2.

Seivert's and Kruse's scores propelled Augustana to a 97-point finish. Seniors Meritxell Delgado and Gabi Swoboda placed 16th and 29th, respectively, while Kaitlyn Yoerg finished 43rd.

"I was pleased with our women's results, yet we have high goals with our program this year." Hellman said. "[Leah] Seivert and [Annie] Kruse were lights-out today. For them to place in the top six which is a tremendous accomplishment for them. If we can keep improving, we should have a great opportunity to reach our goals this season."

Northern Sun Intercollege Conference rival Minnesota Duluth notched first-place honors on the women's side after tallying 74 total points. The Vikings followed the fourth-ranked Bulldogs, just 23 points behind.

The Augustana men's team was led by senior Adam Braun, who placed seventh with a time of 26:18. Keegan Carda followed Braun's performance, placing 16th (26:36). Nick Larsen and Glen Ellingson finished 23rd and 26th, respectively, while Nathan Hauge took 27th.

"We felt okay about our finish in the men's race, although we had goals of first, our placing at this point of the season is okay." Hellman said. "When we are race shape and enter our championship season, we will be much more improved. I thought [Adam] Braun and [Nick] Larsen were our highlights on our men's team. We hope to improve our pack time throughout the season."

The Viking men's team followed the women's performance, placing second overall at the Roy Griak in the Maroon II Division. Augustana racked up 99 points in the men's race, only nine points behind Wisconsin-Parkside.

The Vikings will head to Sioux City, IA for the Briar Cliff Invite on Oct. 11.
