SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – No. 21 Augustana volleyball won in straight sets against St. Cloud State Saturday night at the Elmen Center with scores of 25-22, 25-16, and 25-23 in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference matchup.
The Vikings improved to 11-3 (4-2 NSIC) with the victory, while the Huskies dropped to 7-7 (1-5 NSIC).
Courtney Ysker led Augustana with 12 kills. The Windom, Minn. native now stands 19 kills shy of joining the 1,000-kill club.
Ashley Wilson followed Ysker's performance with 11 kills of her own, while Sydney Hunsley chipped in seven.
Hunsley recorded a team-best .700 attack percentage.
Viking setter's Anna Sykora and Marissa Johnson combined for 37 assists, while defensive specialist Tahlyr Banks recorded a team-best 24 digs.
In the first set, SCSU jumped out to an early 8-6 lead. Two back-to-back kills by Ysker put Augustana ahead of the St. Cloud State at 12-11. The Huskies responded later in the set scoring two points, forcing the Vikings to take timeout with the set tied at 22. Three final points from Augustana closed out the set 25-22, putting the Vikings up one game to nothing in the match.
Augustana dominated in the second set, going on a 7-1 run early, which was highlighted by three straight kills from Ysker that gave the Vikings a good momentum boost. SCSU answered with a 5-0 run of their own later in the set to cut the Augustana lead to four. The Vikings countered by scoring six of the last seven points to win the second set 25-16, and seize control of the match at 2-0.
The battle continued in the third set with both teams combining for 15 lead changes. Augustana finally pulled away after two back-to-back kills from Ysker and Bailey Koch made St. Cloud State take a timeout to try and find an answer. The Huskies got the answer they were hoping for with back-to-back kills, which brought SCSU to within a point at 24-23. A final kill from Johnson ended St. Cloud State's hopes of extending the match another set, and gave the Vikings the 3-0 sweep.
Augustana continues NSIC play next Friday, Oct. 3 against Minnesota State Moorhead with a start time of 7 p.m. Following that match, the Vikings will meet up with Northern State on Oct. 4 with a start time of 3 p.m. Both matches will be at the Elmen Center.
