BOX SCORE
ABERDEEN, S.D. –
Payton Pry came up big for Augustana soccer on Sunday, scoring both goals in a 2-1 overtime victory at Northern State in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play. The Vikings improved to 7-1 (5-0 NSIC) with the win. The Wolves fell to 3-5 (2-3 NSIC) with the loss.
Augustana's 7-1 start to this season tied the best start in team history through eight games. Its current seven-game winning streak also tied the team record.
Pry's two goals gave her five on the year, a new career high for the senior forward.
Annie Thoresen's playmaking abilities were on full display in the victory as the Minnetonka, Minn. native setup both Pry goals with great crosses, upping her season total to a team-leading five.
The Vikings had 25 shots – their third straight game with that amount – which tied a season high.
NSU's Anna Bondy had the lone goal of the contest for Northern State, her sixth of the season.
Both teams battled early, trading off possessions before Augustana took control on the offensive side and dominated possession for the rest of the way in the first half.
The Vikings' offensive pressure paid off in the 26th minute after Pry scored off a cross from Thoresen to give Augustana a 1-0 lead over the Wolves.  For Pry, it was her fourth goal of the season. Thoresen recorded her fourth assist of 2014 on the play.
Despite multiple scoring chances the rest of the half, the Vikings were unable to capitalize, and took a 1-0 lead into halftime.
Augustana held a 10-3 advantage in shots over NSU in the first 45 minutes of action.
In the second half, Northern State tightened up its defense and fought back, getting the equalizer from Bondy on a set piece in the 75th minute, tying the match at 1-1.
The Vikings got two good scoring chances late in the second half from Thoresen and Pry, but just couldn't take advantage, resulting in 1-1 tie at the end of regulation.
In overtime, Augustana got back to its first-half ways and controlled possession. Pry got the golden goal at the 95:59 mark after heading in another well-delivered cross by Thoresen into the inside post, giving the Vikings the 2-1 victory.
Augustana returns to the pitch next weekend with another road trip against NSIC foes Bemidji State and Minnesota Crookston.
