Schilling powers Vikings past Mavericks with a career-high 31 points

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. –
No. 12 Augustana College men's basketball trailed No. 16 Minnesota State 72-67 with 6:26 to play but tied the game with just over a minute left to force overtime. The Vikings, led by Casey Schilling's career-high 31 points and game-high 13 rebounds, dominated the overtime session to earn a 98-89 win over the Mavericks. With the win, Augustana improved to 15-1 on the season, marking its best start in school history. The Vikings took over sole position of first place in the South Division at 9-1 in conference play. Minnesota State drops to 12-3 overall, 7-2 in the NSIC.
 
How it happened
• MSU grabbed the first lead of the night but the Vikings started off the first four minutes of the game on a 13-5 run to grab the eight-point lead.
• The next six minutes of the game were played tight by both teams but MSU went on a 10-4 run over a two and a half minute stretch to tie the game at 23 with 7:45 remaining in the half.
• Daniel Jansen sparked the Vikings over the next minute, scoring seven straight points for the Vikings giving his team a 30-25 lead.
• Connor Miller then hit back-to-back 3-pointers for the Mavericks to give them a 31-30 lead.
• MSU led by two at 34-32 with 3:55 remaining in the half before the Vikings went on an 8-2 run to head into the locker room with a 40-36 lead.
• Casey Schilling and Jansen each scored 13 points for the Vikings in the first half.
• Augustana shot 56 percent (17 of 30) from the field in the first 20 minutes, hitting just 1 of 6 from 3-point range.
• Augustana's defense kept the Mavericks in check in the first half.
• The Vikings forced five turnovers and picked up three steals and four blocks in the first period.
• Minnesota State held on to a six point lead through the first couple minutes of the second half until the Mavericks went on a 16-2 run over a four minute stretch to take a 55-46 lead with 13:31 remaining in the game.
• The Mavericks hit three 3-pointers during the run, including two straight by TJ Lake.
• Augustana went on to score seven straight points to get within two at 55-53 but Lake answered with another triple to help MSU extend the lead back to five at 58-53.
• The Vikings continued to chip away at the MSU lead getting to the free throw line and making six freebies in the next five and a half minutes to cut the lead to one again at 72-71 with 5:34 left.
• Augustana would tie the game twice in the final five minutes, with the crucial basket coming on a free throw by Jansen that knotted the game at 78 with 1:05 to go.
• The Vikings had a chance for the win when Jansen attacked Assem Marei at the rim but came up short giving MSU the ball with five seconds left.
• The Mavericks pushed the floor and got a shot off in the paint but Schilling swatted the Connor Miller shot away for his fourth block of the night to send the game to overtime.
• It was all Augustana in the overtime session as the Vikings out-scored MSU 20-11 in the extra frame.
• The Vikings jumped out to a nine point lead after opening overtime on a 12-3 run going in front 90-81.
• Schilling sparked the run with a big 3-pointer and the Vikings held on for the wild win in front of a huge crowd at the Arena.
