ST. CLOUD, Minn. - No. 20 Augustana volleyball (14-5, 7-4 NSIC) came away victorious Saturday night in St. Cloud, Minn. as they defeated the Huskies (8-11, 4-7 NSIC) in four sets (23-25, 25-22, 25-21, 25-23).
Augustana lost a close set in the opener 23-25, before regrouping and putting three solid sets together. The Vikings played the Huskies close throughout as no set was decided by more than 4 points. For much of the match the two teams traded points. The fourth-set came down to a block by Kaufmann and Finley to help close out the match victory.
The Vikings were led by
Lauren Waite who posted a career high in kills with 21. Waite took 45 attempts for a match hitting percentage of .400. The last time a Viking has totaled at least 20 kills in a match was Nov. 8th of last year when
Courtney Ysker had 24 against Minnesota Crookston. Also posting double-digit kills were junior
Brittany Cech, who had 13, and sophomore
Ashley Wilson, who had 10.
Alex Banker set a career mark this evening in assists as she totaled an even 50 against the Huskies. The last time Augustana had a setter earn 50 or more assists was back on Nov. 7, 2014 when
Marissa Johnson had 54 in a four set match against Bemidji State.
Augustana had nine total blocks in the contest, and leading the way in blocks for the Vikings was
Becca Finley who had seven assisted blocks. Junior
Kelsey Kaufmann added four assisted blocks while Cech and Wilson each added two assisted blocks of their own.
The Vikings played a good all-around defensive game this evening as they had four girls with double-digit digs. Sophomore
Tahlyr Banks led the way with 15 digs followed by Cech who had 12. Banker and junior
Ivy Pearson each added 10 digs of their own.
Augustana ends the weekend going 1-1 and will be back in action on Tuesday Oct. 20, as they host Wayne State at 7 p.m. The Vikings will be at home on Friday and Saturday as well, when the host Minot State and the University of Mary.
