SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The Augustana women's basketball team (6-1, 1-0 NSIC) opened the weekend against Minnesota State (1-4, 0-1 NSIC) by defeating the Mavericks, 96-93 in double overtime Friday night to earn their first Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference victory of the season in the Sioux Falls Arena.
Augustana defeated Minnesota State in thrilling, double overtime, fashion Friday night. After trailing by as many as 10-points late in the third quarter, the team rebounded and began their comeback.
Sophomore
Allie Koehn was held to just one free-throw for much of the game until she found her rhythm midway through the fourth-quarter. With the Vikings trailing by 10, Koehn hit three of four 3-pointers to get the Vikings back in the game.
With Augustana within striking distance, senior guard
Sophie Kenney took over the game in the fourth quarter, after going scoreless in the third. Kenney scored 19 of her career-high 28 points in the fourth quarter and overtime. Kenney hit two clutch three's that followed what looked like game ending three's from Minnesota State. After missing two free-throws in the second overtime, she stepped up and got to the line for two more free-throws. Kenney went 1-2 from the line to give the Vikings a three-point advantage, and the win after an unsuccessful heave from Minnesota State.
Double-Double PartyFor the first time since Jan. 20, 2012 when they played Upper Iowa, Augustana had two players earn a double-double in the same game.
Sophomore guard
Logan O'Farrell was the first hit the double-double mark against MSU. O'Farrell had 17 points and 13 rebounds in the contest. This was O'Farrell's second double-double of her career. O'Farrell also ended the game with six steals, three blocks and one assist.
Senior forward
Nicole Kerkhoff joined O'Farrell as the second Viking to earn a double-double on the night. Kerkhoff had 17 points and a season-high 11 rebounds. This was Kerkhoffs second double-double of the season and eighth of her career. Kerkhoff ended the game with two steals and two assists.
The Tale of Two QuartersThe third and fourth quarters were almost two completely different basketball games for the Vikings. In the third quarter Augustana shot a game low 22 percent from the field on 4-18 shooting and 28 percent from behind the 3-point arc on 2-7 shooting. But as the quarter came to an end, so did their shooting woes.
On the verge of their comeback efforts Augustana hit a switch on the offensive end. The Viking shot 42 percent from the field on 8-19 shooting and a game-high 42 percent from behind the 3-point arc on 3-7 shooting.
The increase in shooting efficiency helped the Vikings shoot 40 percent from the field and 41 percent from behind the arc to give them the 96-93 victory in double overtime.
Next UpAugustana will be back in action tomorrow afternoon as they host the Golden Bears of Concordia-St. Paul at the Sioux Falls Arena. Tip-off versus the Golden Bears is set for 4 p.m.
