No. 3 Augustana rolls past Concordia-St. Paul behind season-high 15 3-pointers

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – No. 3 Augustana scored a season-high 104 points on its way to a 104-66 win over Concordia-St. Paul (2-5, 0-2 NSIC) in front of 2,238 fans at the Sioux Falls Arena on Saturday. Alex Richter led all players with 22 points on 9 of 12 shooting, including knocking down four 3-pointers.
 
Richter has scored 20-plus points in three games this season, and now eight in his career. Casey Schilling pitched in with 17 points and seven rebounds while Daniel Jansen put up 17 points and six rebounds.
 
Augustana knocked down a season-high 15 3-pointers finishing 15 of 34 from behind the arc. The 15 3-pointers by the Vikings is the most since hitting 16 against Northern State on Feb. 15, 2014.Tanner Odegaard put up a career-high 13 points for the Vikings hitting 4 of 5 3-pointers, marking his fourth career game with four 3-pointers.
 
Jordan Spencer dished out a career-high 11 assists, marking his third career game with double-digits in assists. He has handed out five or more assists in all seven games this season and 22 straight games dating back to Jan. 24 of last season.
 
Adam Beyer scored nine points and dished out four assists while shooting 3 of 4 from the field, including 2 of 2 from behind the arc. Steven Schaefer added eight points hitting 2 of 3 3-pointers.
 
The Vikings finished the game shooting 50 percent from the field, marking the third straight game shooting better than 50 percent. Augustana also shot a season-high 83 percent from the free throw line hitting 25 of 30 shots from the line.  
 
After starting 0 for 4 from the field, the Vikings went on a 14-0 run over the first five-plus minutes of the game as the Vikings were able to hold CSP off the board early. The Golden Bears started the game 0 for 8 from the field and did not get on the board until a pair of free throws from Diallo Powell at the 14:05 mark of the half.
 
Mike Yahnke hit the first field goal of the game for CSP with 13:16 remaining in the half cutting Augustana's lead to eight at 14-6 but a minute later the Vikings were able to stretch their lead back up to 10 after a 3-pointer by Tanner Odegaard that gave Augustana a 19-9 lead.
 
After Augustana took an 11-point lead at 27-16 after a pair of free throws by Jansen, the Golden Bears went on a 5-0 run cutting the lead to six at 27-21 with 8:35 to play in the half.
 
Adam Beyer knocked down a 3-pointer to stop CSP's run and give the Vikings a nine point lead sparking a 25-14 run over the final seven minutes of the half that allowed Augustana to take a comfortable 52-35 lead heading into the break.
 
Richter had the hot hand in the first half for the Vikings scoring 17 points on 7 of 10 shooting, including 3 of 5 from 3-point range. Schilling added nine points in the half while Jansen pitched in with eight, Odegaard seven and Beyer six.
 
Spencer dished out seven assists in the first half as the Vikings distributed the ball well as a team getting open looks off the pass. Augustana shot 52.9 percent (18 of 34) from the field, including 7 of 16 from 3-point range in the first 20 minutes.
 
The Golden Bears started the half cold from the field but recovered to shoot 40.7 percent (11 of 27) from the field. CSP hit 11 of 17 free throws in the first half and were led in scoring by Bryndan Matthews' 11 first-half points.
 
The Vikings got to the foul line early and often in the second half, opening up the final frame on a 5-2 run hitting five free throws to open up a 57-37 lead.
 
Shea Mandli converted a 3-point-play for the Golden Bears to get his team within 17 at 57-40 but that would be as close as Concordia-St. Paul would get the rest of the way.
 
With Augustana holding a 25-point lead with 12:28 remaining in the game, Odegaard hit a pair of bookend 3-pointers on a 10-0 run that allowed the Vikings to take a comfortable 83-48 lead.
 
Augustana went on to hit eight 3-pointers in the second half while connecting on 16 of 19 free throws to overwhelm the Golden Bears.
 
Augustana had 13 players get in on the scoring on the night. The Vikings have now won six straight games and have scored 90-plus points in four of those six.
 
Augustana will go on the road for a pair of NSIC contests against the North Division next Friday and Saturday. The Vikings open the trip at Bemidji State on Friday, Dec. 11 at 8 p.m. before taking on Minnesota Crookston on Saturday at 6 p.m.
 
Augustana returns home on Saturday, Dec. 19, to host Wayne State in the final game of the calendar year.
