Five players reach double-figures in No. 2 Augustana's win over SMSU

The Vikings tied a program record with its 24th win of the season

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. –
All five starters scored in double-figures, led by Daniel Jansen's 21 points as No. 2 Augustana College men's basketball defeated Southwest Minnesota State 92-80 on Friday night at the Sioux Falls Arena. Augustana improved to 24-1 (18-1 NSIC) tying the single season wins record in program history with its 24th victory.
 
Augustana finished 24-7 in 2009-10, marking the most wins in a single season. SMSU drops to 12-13, 8-11 NSIC after the loss.
 
Daniel Jansen finished with 21 points, eight rebounds to go along with two assists and two steals. Alex Richter pitched in with 19 points, matching his career-high with five 3-pointers, going 5 of 6 from 3-point range. Casey Schilling added 16 points, seven rebounds and matched his career-high with five steals. Adam Beyer finished with 14 points eight rebounds, five assists, two steals and one block.
 
How it happened
• The Vikings jumped out to a 16-9 lead 6:24 into the game, using a 8-0 run thanks to 3-pointers from Alex Richter and Steven Schaefer.
• The Mustangs answered with a 9-3 run over the next four minutes to cut Augustana's lead to one at 19-18 with 9:08 remaining in the half.
• Travis Meinders scored on layup to bring SMSU within one at 19-18, breaking a three-plus minute scoring drought by both teams.
• Jordan Spencer broke the Vikings' scoring drought with a 3-pointer on a fastbreak sparking an 8-2 Augustana run that allowed the Vikings to take a 27-20 lead with 6:23 remaining in the half.
• SMSU was able to cut the lead to one once again after MJ Delmore scored eight straight points on the tail end of a 12-6 run to cut Augustana's lead to 33-32.
• The Vikings picked up the pressure on the defense and got back-to-back 3-pointers in transition to push the lead right back to seven at 39-32.
• Augustana took a nine-point 43-34 lead into the locker room at the half.
• The Vikings shot 45.7 percent (16 of 35), including 50 percent (6 of 12) from 3-point range.
• Augustana was 5 of 10 from the free throw line while SMSU did not shoot a free throw in the first 20 minutes.
• Adam Beyer, Jordan Spencer and Alex Richter each scored eight points in the first half for the Vikings while Daniel Jansen and Casey Schilling each pitched in with seven.
• Augustana forced eight SMSU turnovers in the first half, leading to 10 points.
• The Vikings extended its lead to 12 at 48-36 quickly in the second half before both teams went toe-to-toe from 3-point range in the next three minutes.
• The two teams combined for five 3-pointers over the next three minutes with SMSU cutting the Vikings lead to seven at 56-49.
• Augustana then attacked the rim scoring six of its next 10 points in the paint to build another double-digit lead at 69-56 with 11:46 remaining in the game.
• The Vikings couldn't bury the Mustangs as they were able to cut the lead to single digits with an 8-3 run but the Vikings had another answer pushing its lead back up to 12 at 79-67.
• SMSU fired right back with a 10-5 run over the next four minutes to get within four at 84-80 with 1:34 to play.
• Adam Beyer put the Vikings up by six on a fastbreak bucket to help Augustana close-out the game on an 8-0 run to earn the 92-80 victory.
