No. 4 Augustana men's basketball takes over top spot in NSIC in win over No. 6 MSU Moorhead

Vikings set program record for consecutive wins with 16th straight victory

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. –
In a highly anticipated match-up between two top-10 teams, No. 4 Augustana College men's basketball used a 24-10 run over the final 6:28 to defeat No. 6 MSU Moorhead 97-80 in front of 3,867 fired-up fans at the Sioux Falls Arena on Saturday night. The Vikings (23-1, 17-1 NSIC) picked up their 16th straight victory, setting a new program record for most consecutive wins in a season.
 
Augustana takes over sole possession of first place in the overall NSIC standings with a record of 17-1 in conference play. The Vikings snapped MSU Moorhead's 13-game win streak as the Dragons drop to 25-2, 16-2 NSIC).
 
Daniel Jansen and Casey Schilling would not be denied in tonight's game, combining for 55 points and 23 rebounds between the two of them. Jansen recorded his fifth double-double of the season with 28 points and 11 rebounds while Schilling pitched in with 27 points and 12 rebounds.   
 
How it happened
• Augustana scored 16 of its first 28 points on the night in the paint as the Vikings and Dragons played a tight contest in the first part of the first half.
• The Vikings held a 28-25 lead with 7:54 remaining in the half before going on a 10-2 run to build an 11-point 38-27 lead.
• Casey Schilling caught fire during the stretch, scoring 8 of the 10 points during the run, capped-off by a transition 3-pointer.
• The Vikings were unable to push the lead any further in the first half as the Dragons scored 16 of the game's next 22 points to cut Augustana's lead to one at 44-43 with less than a minute to play in the half.
• Augustana closed-out the half on a 4-0 run to take a 48-43 lead at the break.
• Schilling led the Vikings with 20 points and eight rebounds in the first half while Daniel Jansen added 12 points and eight rebounds for the Vikings.
• Steven Schaefer came off the bench and picked up nine points in the first half.
• The Vikings shot 43 percent (18 of 42) from the field in the first half, including 5 of 17 from 3-point range.
• Augustana dominated the Dragons on the glass, out-rebounding MSUM 25-11, including 14-2 on the offensive glass.
• MSUM shot 58 percent (18 of 31) from the field in the first half, including 4 of 15 from 3-point range.
• The Dragons came out of the locker room firing to start the second half, taking its only lead of the game at 49-48 with 19:05 remaining in the game.
• Jansen stopped the run converting a 3-point-play and the Vikings would not lose the lead the rest of the night.
• The Dragons tied the score at 51 on a basket by Jordan Riewer and the two teams played neck and neck for the next five minutes.
• Augustana's next three baskets came from 3-point range but the Dragons answered with three of their own as the Vikings held a slim 67-66 advantage with 12:26 to play.
• The Vikings were able to build their lead up to seven and after four straight points from the Dragons, Augustana went on a 24-10 run over the final 6:28 to slay the Dragons.
• Augustana hit three 3-pointers during the stretch, including two straight from Jansen that pushed the Vikings lead well into double-digits.

• Tonight was the third time that Augustana has played a team ranked in the top 10 while itself being ranked in the top 10 in the country.
• Augustana and St. Cloud State split a pair of games during the 1988 season with both teams being ranked in the top 10 in the national poll.
