Hamilton turns in gem in Vikings' win

BOX SCORE

TUCSON, Ariz. – A day after scoring 33 runs, the Augustana baseball team came out on top in a pitcher's duel, winning 4-2 over Southwest Minnesota State on Friday at the Kino Sports Complex. The win improved the Vikings' record to 3-6 and dropped the Mustangs to 3-7 on the season.

Ryan Hamilton (1-1) picked up the complete-game win on the mound, going the full nine innings. Hamilton really was dialed in on the bump, allowing only two runs and striking out a season-high six batters.

Jack Goihl crushed his second home run of the year as part of a 1-for-3 day at the plate. He also added two runs scored.

Zach Dibble, in a pinch-hitting role, went for 1 for 1 with two RBI in the game.

The Vikings took a 1-0 lead after a solo home run by Goihl with two outs in the bottom of the first. The Robbinsdale, Minn. native turned on a 0-1 pitch and smashed it over the left field wall.

Hamilton used some good pitching early to limit what the Mustangs could do at the plate, holding them to just three hits through the first three innings. The right-hander was able to get SMSU to hit a lot of ground balls early on that led to some easy outs for Augustana.

A two-out RBI double by Shane Sellner tied things up at 1-1 in the top of the fourth inning. It was Sellner's fifth RBI this year.

Southwest Minnesota State got itself in scoring position in the top half of the sixth with a runner on third base with two outs. But Hamilton once again proved he is more than capable in big moments of a game, getting the Mustangs' Jarred Carlson to ground out to Patrick Fiala at third base to end the inning and keep the game tied at 1-1.

The Vikings took advantage of Hamilton's clutch pitching shortly after, getting the game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning after a throwing error by Southwest Minnesota State allowed for Bryce Berg to get on first and brought in Goihl from third.

The sophomore was brilliant on the hill in the top of the seventh, retiring the Mustangs' side in order on just 10 pitches to keep Augustana ahead 2-1.

Augustana added two big runs on a Dibble two-out single that went through right side to give it the security it was looking for late, making it 4-1.

Hamilton got his complete-game win after going back out on the mound in the top of the ninth inning. Despite surrendering a run in the inning, he closed out the game in style with a three-pitch strikeout of SMSU's Derek Branson for the final out.

The Vikings return to action tomorrow for a doubleheader against Concordia-St. Paul. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. CT.
