No. 25 Augustana softball takes down No. 14 Caldwell in first game on Tuesday

BOX SCORE

CLERMONT, Fla. –
Jenelle Trautmann allowed just one run on five hits while striking out seven batters in No. 25 Augustana softball's 4-2 win over No. 14 Caldwell University on Tuesday afternoon. Sarah Kennedy extended her hit streak to 20 games, going 2 for 3 with single a double and an RBI.

Caldwell struck first scoring a run on a fielder's choice with the bases loaded in the bottom of the first to go in front 1-0. Trautmann slammed the door shut on the Cougars and did not allow another run leaving runners on second and third and pitched around a leadoff single in the second.

The Vikings tied the game and eventually took the lead in the top of the third inning. Maddie Merriam started the rally with a one-out single before coming around to score when Carley Pickett reached on a fielding error to even things up at 1-1. Pickett moved all the way up to third base on the play and scored the go-ahead run on an RBI single by Caitlin Nichol. With two outs in the inning, Kennedy delivered her team-leading seventh double of the season to drive in Nichol and give the Vikings a 3-1 lead.

The pitchers dug in to a battle over the next two and a half innings before the Vikings broke through in the top of the sixth when a Jordan Schaffer RBI double scored Kennedy, who led off the inning with a single, to put Augustana in front 4-1.

Caldwell loaded the bases with nobody out in the bottom of the seventh inning and Pickett returned to the circle with a save opportunity in hand. Karlee Koopman replaced Pickett, who pitched the fifth and sixth innings for the Vikings, in the top of the seventh before Pickett came back into the game with the bases loaded.

The Cougars plated a run on a fielder's choice before Pickett struck out the last batter of the game to give the Vikings a 4-2 win. Pickett earned her second save of the season and the 15th of her career putting her four away from setting the school record for saves.

Augustana is currently playing Wayne State (Mich.) in Clermont, Fla. in its second game of the day.
