Rally in game two gets Vikings split with Wildcats

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Augustana baseball team picked up a spilt on Friday evening at Karras Park Home of Ronken Field. The Vikings went to 22-13 (13-7 NSIC) on the season, while the Wildcats moved to 16-19 (11-11 NSIC).

Game One

Augustana couldn't overcome a 5-0 start by WSC in the first contest, losing 5-2.

The Vikings recorded nine hits in the loss.

Jacob James led all Augustana players with three hits in the game.

Marcus O'Neill and Lucas Barry each drove in two runs at the plate.

Ryan Hamilton (2-3) was credited with the loss. Hamilton went all seven innings, giving him a team-leading four complete games this year. The sophomore allowed five runs on five hits, while also striking out five batters.

Wayne State broke open a scoreless game in the top half of the second after Kevin Andersen drove in Albert Johnson, who led off the inning with a ground-rule double to left field.

The Wildcats made their move in the third inning, scoring three runs on three hits to push their lead to four over the Vikings. Michael Herman's three-run homer with two-outs turned out to be the play of the game.

Two runs in the bottom of the fifth by Augustana would cut the WSC lead to three at 5-2. O'Neill brought both runs in with the swing of his bat with two outs in the inning, sending a single that snuck through the left side of the infield to score James and Patrick O'Donnell.

Barry's double to left center in the sixth inning drove in two more runs for the Vikings, making it a one-run game late. The freshman was unable to get himself around all the bases, as Justin Warne struck out to end the inning the next batter.

Augustana had a chance in the bottom half of the seventh after James led off with a double to right center, but was out trying to go to third base one batter latter on a fielder's choice. With two outs and runners on second and third, Patrick Fiala had an opportunity to put the Vikings ahead for good, but grounded out to first base to end the game.

Game Two

Augustana erased a 6-0 deficit on the way to an 11-8 victory.

Bryce Berg, Jack Goihl, and O'Donnell all hit home runs as part a 17-hit game for Augustana, who upped its record to 18-1 this season when recording at least 10 hits in a ballgame.

Berg also added four RBI in the win, a new career high.

Fiala had his third three-hit game of the year, going 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored.

Dalton Allen (2-0) picked up his second win of 2015 in a relief role. Allen went 1.2 innings, giving up one run on two hits.

An Alex Kreft single that shot through the left side of the infield scored two runs and made it 6-0 in favor of Wayne State.

The Viking comeback began in the third inning, when they struck for four runs on three hits. Berg's single that went up the middle of the infield scoring two runners in the process highlighted the big inning at the plate for Augustana.

Another four-run inning in the bottom half of the fourth put the Vikings up for good in this one. Augustana got its four runs on six hits. O'Donnell started things off with a leadoff solo homer, but it was Berg again who delivered the key play of the explosive inning with a two-run home run to left field with no outs.

Goihl's two-run blast to right field made it 10-7 Vikings in the bottom of the fifth. For Goihl, it was his team-leading 11th of the season, which tied his career high for home runs in a season set last year.

The Wildcats made it a three-run at 11-8 in the seventh after Colton Vien hit Nathan Ackerman with the bases loaded to bring in a run. Troy Pilkington came in for relief shortly after and got Augustana out of the jam.

With two outs in the top of the ninth, WSC threatened with runners on first and second base. Jacob Blank, in for Pilkington, put this one to bed, getting Wayne State to ground out to second base to end the game and pick up his first collegiate save.

The Vikings are back in action on Sunday for two more games against the Wildcats. First pitch is set for 12 p.m. Sunday's doubleheader will also be Senior Day for Augustana.
