SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Augustana baseball team couldn't take advantage of a pair double-digit hit games on Sunday, losing two to Wayne State on Senior Day at Karras Park Home of Ronken Field. The Vikings dropped to 22-15 (13-9 NSIC) with the losses, while the Wildcats improved to 18-19 (13-11 NSIC) on the year.
The two losses gave WSC a 3-1 series win over Augustana for the weekend.
Game OneThe Vikings failed to capitalize on an early three-run lead, losing 9-7 in extra innings.
Augustana had 15 hits in the loss.
Ryne Lees (4-2) picked up the loss in a relief role of
Michael Letkewicz. The right-hander went 3.1 innings on the day, giving up four runs on six hits. Lees did have six strikeouts in the contest against 18 batters faced.
Jacob James had a game-high three hits and scored one run for the Vikings.
Patrick Fiala added three RBI.
Jack Goihl went 2-for-4 at the plate, his 17th multi-hit game of the season, tied for most on the team.
Augustana jumped out a 4-1 lead after the first inning. The Vikings scored their four runs on five hits.
Patrick O'Donnell capped off the solid start at the plate with a two-out, two-RBI double to right center that drove in Fiala and
Bryce Berg.
Wayne State cut the Viking lead to one in the bottom half of the second after Nathan Ackerman's double down the right field line scored a runner with two outs.
Another two-run inning in the top of the fifth inning gave the Wildcats their first lead of the game at 5-4. WSC got its two runs on two hits.
Lucas Barry got things all tied up 5-5 in the bottom half of the fifth with an RBI single that went up the middle of the infield and scored Berg from second base, who led off the inning with a walk.
Neither team threatened to score in the final two innings leading to extra-inning play.
Wayne State put this one out of reach with a four spot in the top half of the eighth inning. Tanner Simons' two-RBI single was the key play in the big inning.
Augustana made a late rally in the bottom of the eighth, scoring two runs with two outs. With two outs and the bases loaded, the Vikings came up just short after
Alex Fink grounded out to second base to end the game, giving the Wildcats the win.
Game TwoA fast start by WSC was too much to overcome for Augustana, losing 8-5 in seven innings.
Tyler Field (2-2) racked up his second loss of the year. The Maple Grove, Minn. native struggled, lasting only one inning while giving up four runs on the mound.
Fink, Fiala, and O'Donnell each had two hits in the loss.
Lucas Wilber went 1-for-2 with an RBI.
Wayne State raced out to a 5-0 lead it never relinquished in the first two innings. The Wildcats got their five runs on five hits.
A Wilber double down the left field line got the Vikings on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth inning, making it 5-1 WSC. For Wilber, the double was the first extra-base hit of the season for the right fielder.
Augustana added a run in the fifth with O'Donnell scoring on a wild pitch by Nick Ragan. O'Donnell opened the inning with a double to left field, then advanced to third on a wild pitch before finally scoring on another wild pitch.
A three-run inning at the plate for the Vikings in the bottom of the sixth inning made it an 8-5 game in favor of WSC. Fiala's two-out two-RBI double to left center highlighted Augustana's lone multi-run inning on offense.
The Vikings were unable to create a scoring chance in the bottom of the seventh, allowing for Wayne State to get the victory.
Augustana will be back in action on Wednesday for a doubleheader against Minnesota Crookston. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
