SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Augustana baseball team closed out its regular-season home schedule with two wins against Sioux Falls on Wednesday night. The Vikings improved to 30-15 (21-9 NSIC) on the year, while the Cougars dropped to 15-31 (12-18 NSIC) with the pair of losses.
Augustana's 30 wins marks the sixth straight year that it has recorded at least 30 victories in a season, all coming under head coach
Tim Huber.
The Vikings upped their winning streak to eight games with the sweep, one off their season high.
Augustana also hit three more home runs in the game-two win.
Game OneThe Vikings took a defensive battle in the first game, winning 3-2 in seven innings.
Zach Reeg (3-0) got his third victory of the season in a relief role. Reeg came in for
Colton Fast, going 1.1 innings on the day. Reeg highlighted his appearance by striking out the USF side to end the game in the top of the seventh.
Patrick Fiala had a game-high two hits in the win. Fiala was the only player on either team to record multiple hits at the plate.
Patrick O'Donnell went 1-for-2 with a run scored.
Augustana scored all three of its runs on errors.
Sioux Falls' pitching staff suffered a rare no-earned-runs-allowed loss on the day.
The Vikings scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to erase a one-run deficit and make it 3-2. Augustana was the beneficiary of some poor fielding by the Cougar infield, which allowed for
Carter Wevik and O'Donnell to reach home plate.
Reeg never gave USF a chance to answer in the top of the seventh inning, fanning the side in order to lock down the victory.
Game TwoThe Vikings used some timely hits by Fiala and
Lucas Barry to rally in the bottom of the eighth in a 6-5 victory, giving them the two-game sweep.
Home runs by Fiala,
TJ Davis, and
Alex Beals helped power the Augustana attack at the plate.
Barry delivered what turned out to be the game-winning hit in the bottom half of the eighth, a single to center field that drove in
Bryce Berg and put the Vikings up for good.
Lucas Wilber added two hits in the game.
Michael Letkewicz (1-4) got his first win this season on the mound in two innings of relief work. Letkewicz was in command during his time on the bump, striking out four of the eight batters he faced. The Waterloo, Iowa native showed good control of his stuff in 32 pitches he threw.
Beals broke open the scoreless game in the third inning with a solo shot to left center field. The sophomore really got ahold of a 2-1 pitch and crushed it deep into the night sky.
Sioux Falls tied things back up at 1-1 the following time up at the plate with a Matthew Minnick solo homer to left center in the top half of the fourth.
The Cougars continued their assault that inning, scoring three more runs to make it 4-1. The big inning was capped off with a Noah Durkin RBI single to left field.
The Vikings began their rally with two runs in the bottom of the fourth that came from Davis' two-run home run to left field.
Jack Goihl tied the game up at 4-4 with a double to center in the fifth inning that scored Wilber, who singled to left field just prior to Goihl's at-bat.
A Brent Jarvis homer gave USF a 5-4 edge in the top of the seventh.
Fiala opened the bottom half of the eighth inning with a leadoff home run down the right field line to tie the contest up at 5-5. For Fiala, it was his ninth on the year.
Berg then singled two batters later, putting the go-ahead runner on base. The senior advanced to second base on a wild pitch, then made it to third on a balk by Alex Wall. After Beals struck out looking, Barry then delivered the clutch hit that drove in Berg, giving Augustana the lead it never relinquished.
Down to their final three outs in the top of the ninth, Sioux Falls couldn't muster up a comeback due to Letkewicz's dominance on the mound, giving the Vikings the sweep.
Augustana will be back in action for its final series of the year, a four-game battle at Upper Iowa. First pitch is set for Friday at 12 p.m.
