FAYETTE, Iowa – Upper Iowa had no answer to a red-hot Augustana baseball team at the plate on Friday at Robertson Woods Field as it pushed its winning streak to 10 games. The Vikings scored 41 wins in two wins (17-12, 24-6) against the Peacocks.
With the two victories, Augustana improved to 32-15 (23-9 NSIC) on the season, while UIU fell to 19-29 (11-23 NSIC).
The Vikings' 22 hits in game one were a new season high.
Augustana's 24 runs also were a season high, and tied for fourth most all-time in a game in program history.
Game OneThe Vikings used an eight-run first inning to outlast UIU 17-12 in seven innings.
Marcus O'Neill,
Patrick Fiala,
Alex Fink, and
Lucas Barry all had three hits in the win.
Fink blasted his seventh homer on the season.
O'Neill tied a season high with three RBI.
Tyler Field (3-2) was credited with the win, coming in a relief role.
Collin Lovell picked up his first save of a year, going the final three innings and giving up one run on two hits and striking out two batters.
Augustana started things off with an eight-run first inning at the plate. The Vikings scored their initial five runs before Upper Iowa was able to record the first out of the game. RBI doubles by
Jack Goihl, Fink, and O'Neill highlighted the hot start in the contest for Augustana.
A two-run second inning pushed the lead to double digits at 10-0 for the Vikings. Augustana got its two runs on back-to-back RBI singles by
Patrick O'Donnell and Barry.
The Peacocks finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second with a sacrifice fly from Jacob Stenberg that brought in Alex George from third base, who led off the inning with a single through the right side, to make it 10-1.
UIU made its way back into this one by cutting the Vikings' lead to two with a seven-run inning at the plate in the third. Upper Iowa's strong performance batting in the inning brought an early end to
Ryan Hamilton's day on the mound, who got the start.
An RBI single to left field by Fiala closed out a three-run inning for Augustana in the fourth, which extended its lead to 13-8.
TJ Davis and O'Neill also recorded one RBI each in the inning.
Upper Iowa refused to go away though, scoring three runs over the next two innings to make it 13-11 Vikings after five innings of play. The Peacocks got their three runs on four hits during the two-inning span.
Fink put this one away in the top half of the sixth with a two-out two-run home run that put Augustana up 17-11, capping off a four-run inning at the plate, and upping the junior's RBI total to four on the afternoon.
The Peacocks got one run in the bottom of the sixth with Mitch Moser's sacrifice fly to right field that scored the runner on third base. Lovell was able to limit the damage though, giving up just the one run after UIU loaded the bases to start the inning.
Lovell shut the door on UIU's comeback bid by retiring the side in the bottom of the seventh to give Vikings the victory.
Game TwoThe trio of
Lucas Wilber,
Bryce Berg, and Fink proved too much as Augustana cruised to a 24-6 victory.
Wilber and Berg delivered the knockout blows in the top of the fourth inning with a pair of grand slams.
Wilber finished his day 2-for-3 with a career-best six RBI.
Berg closed out his day 2-for-3 with a career-high six RBI. The senior also scored three runs.
Fink crushed two more home runs as part of a 3-for-3 day at the plate. Fink also had a career-high six RBI and five runs scored.
Ryne Lees (5-2) racked up his fifth victory on the mound this year. Lees went four innings, giving up three runs on seven hits while striking out two.
Lincoln Voss earned a three-inning save, his first of 2015.
The Vikings again started fast with a four-run inning at the plate in the first which came from back-to-back-to-back RBI hits by Fink, Berg, and Wilber with two outs.
Augustana again threatened in the top of the second inning. The Vikings got runners on the corners with one out. O'Neill was able to bring in Barry on third base with a sacrifice fly to center field to make it a five-run game.
Fink delivered at the plate in the top half of the third, sending a two-run shot to left center to make it 7-0 in favor of Augustana.
Upper Iowa got on the board in the bottom of the third, scoring three runs on four hits to reduce the deficit to four. George's two-RBI single highlighted the Peacocks' big inning at the plate.
Augustana blew this game wide open by loading the bases to start the top of the fourth with no outs. A throwing error by UIU at home resulted in the Vikings getting one run across the plate and kept the bases juiced. Fiala advanced all runners 90 feet with an RBI single to left field that scored
Jacob James from third and kept the bases loaded. Fink would bring in a run after getting hit by a 3-2 pitch, making it 10-3 with no outs. Berg was walked immediately after, bringing in Goihl. Wilber then delivered the backbreaker, a grand slam to left field to make it 15-3.
Berg capped off the best inning of the year at the plate for Augustana with a grand slam of his own to make it 21-3 Vikings.
Augustana scored two runs in the top of the fifth to make it 23-3, highlighted by
Zach Dibble's leadoff home run.
Upper Iowa scored one run in the bottom half of the fifth to bring its total on the game to four.
Fink wrapped up his day in style, hitting his second home run of the game, a leadoff shot to left center in the sixth, giving him career-high tying sixth RBI in the contest. The junior's blast made it a 24-4 game in favor of the Vikings.
George jacked a two-run shot of his own to left field in the bottom of the sixth for the Peacocks to make it 24-6.
The Vikings went to get the win from there.
Augustana closes out the regular season on Saturday with the final two games of the four-game series with Upper Iowa. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
