Hamilton goes the distance in extra-inning win over No. 2 Minnesota State

Vikings advance to semi-finals to face No. 1 St. Cloud State

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Behind a great performance by Ryan Hamilton, the Augustana baseball team knocked off No. 2 seed Minnesota State 4-2 in 10 innings on Thursday at Karras Park Home of Ronken Field. The win advanced the Vikings to the semi-finals in the NSIC/US Bank Tournament.

Augustana improved to 36-15 on the year with the victory, while the Mavericks slipped to 41-6 on the year.

With the win, the Vikings' winning streak rose to 14 games, setting up a meeting with No. 1 seed St. Cloud State (49-3) on Thursday.

Hamilton (4-3) was the star of the show, going all 10 innings with giving up just two runs on nine hits. The Spearfish, S.D. native also walked just one batter and retired the MSU side in order six times during the day.

Patrick Fiala went 1-for-4 at the plate, the lone hit a solo shot to left center.

Justin Warne had an overall good game, going 1-for-3 with an RBI and run scored. The junior also made numerous highlight-reel plays in the field for Augustana.

The Vikings had a tough start at the plate, getting only one hit in the first three innings of play.

Despite the struggles at the plate, Hamilton was dealing early on the mound, holding the Mavericks to no hits in the first two innings while only using 19 pitches.

Jack Goihl gave Augustana a little bit of life in the fourth with a two-out single to right field to put a runner on for the first time since early in the first inning. Fiala then popped out to center field one batter to bring the inning to a close, keeping the game scoreless.

The Vikings finally pushed a run across in the top half of the fifth inning. Back-to-back-back hits by Alex Fink, Bryce Berg, and Patrick O'Donnell loaded the bases with no outs. With one out, Warne hit a deep sacrifice fly to center to bring in Fink from third base, giving Augustana the 1-0 lead.

Hamilton continued his strong start by holding MSU to a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the sixth, keeping his scoreless streak going.

Fiala gave the Vikings a two-run lead with a leadoff home run to deep left center to start the seventh inning, and give the recently named NSIC Newcomer of the Year his 10th homer of the year.

Augustana couldn't take advantage of two runners on the base baths in the top of the eighth with no outs to increase its lead.

Minnesota State evened this one up at 2-2 during its turn at the plate in the eighth with a two-run blast by Max Waletich with one out, the ninth of the year for the senior.

Hamilton, shaking off the two-run blast an inning earlier, found his control once again, retiring the Maverick side in the bottom of the ninth to send this one into extra innings.

The Vikings answered with two runs in the top of the 10th go up for good at 4-2. O'Donnell got things going with a single through the left side with one out. He then stole second base and advanced to third and a misthrow by MSU's Nolan Johnson going for the throw out at second. Lucas Barry then brought in O'Donnell with a ground out to second. Augustana got one more run with after Jacob James drove in Warne with a double to put the Vikings up two.

Hamilton never let Minnesota State have a chance to respond in the bottom of the 10th, retiring the side in order to close the game out.

The Vikings are back in action tomorrow for a showdown with the Huskies. First pitch is set for 12 p.m. at Karras Park Home of Ronken Field.
