SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - Augustana volleyball (4-0) earned two big victories Friday over Black Hills State (3-3) and Northwest Missouri State (5-1), as they hosted day one of the 2015 Augustana Showcase.
The Vikings jumped out to an early lead against the Yellow Jackets of Black Hills State and didn't look back in set one, winning 25-4. After dropping set two in a tightly contested match, 23-25, The Vikings would go onto defeat Black Hills State in four sets behind juniors,
Dani Magdzas and
Kelsey Kaufmann and senior
Sydney Hunsley who each posted double-digit kills.
Match OneMagdzas led the way for the Vikings, posting a career high in kills with 13. She was followed by Hunsley and Kaufmann who each added 11. Augustana ended the match with 60 kills.
Kaufmann and Hunsely each had 7 total blocks, tieing for a team high. Augustana combined for 11 total blocks.
Sophomore
Tahlyr Banks continued her impressive start to the season, earning 27 digs vs the Yellow Jackets. Junior
Brittany Cech and
Ivy Pearson each had 15 and eight respectively.
Augustana had a season high for assists in a four-set match, with 57. Senior
Marissa Johnson led the way with 24. Sophomore
Alex Banker added 20 and junior
Anna Sykora pitched in 8.
Augustana had a season high attacking percentage with .280 while holding Black Hills State to a .037 mark for the four sets.
The Vikings defeated the Yellow Jackets in four sets, 25-4, 23-25, 25-20 and 25-15.
Match TwoRedshirt freshmen,
Lauren Waite was the only Viking to reach double-digit in the three-set win over the Bearcats. Waite ended the match with 11, while Magdzas added nine and Kaufmann seven.
The Vikings earned 50 digs as a team and were led by Banks with 15 and Cech with 14. Johnson also added seven digs in the game.
Vikings had two with double-digits assists, Banker (17) and Johnson (15). Banks also added four assists.
Augustana held the Bearcats to a .143 hitting percentage, their second lowest of the season, while the Vikings had their third highest at .262.
Augustana handed Northwest their first loss of the season in three sets, 25-20, 25-16, 25-17.
The Vikings will be in action once again Saturday morning at 10 a.m. as the host Southwest Baptist, followed by #8 Grand Valley State at 4 p.m.
