SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - Augustana Volleyball (7-1) upsets the No. 8 ranked Lakers of Grand Valley State (4-4) in four sets in their final match of the 2015 Augustana Showcase.
Augustana was led by juniors
Kelsey Kaufmann (11) and
Dani Magdzas (10) in kills while senior,
Sydney Hunsley added 8 of her own. The Vikings had 15 in sets one and four and 12 in sets two and three for 54 in the match, the Lakers were held to just 39.
Both Augustana and Grand Valley had eight blocks in the match. The Hunsley had five total blocks while freshman
Lauren Waite and junior
Becca Finley added three and two respectively.
Assists for Augustana were spread out evenly. Senior
Marissa Johnson and junior
Anna Sykora each had 24 assists in the upset victory.
Sophomore
Tahlyr Banks had her best performance of the Augustana Showcase, digging a tournament high 32 balls during the match. Junior
Brittany Cech add 12 and Johnson had 11.
Augustana as a team had seven aces in the match. Junior
Brittany Cech had three, Johnson two and Sykora had one.
In a match that was back-and-forth from the first serve the Vikings were able to make enough plays to come away with the win in four sets, 25-19, 22-25, 25-16, 25-23, and close out nonconference action with a 7-1 record. The is the second straight year Augustana has gone 7-1 in nonconference play while also sweeping their own tournament.
Augustana will begin Northern Sun Conference play Thursday as they host 2014 NCAA Runner-up, Southwest Minnesota State (7-1) at 7 p.m.
