SIOUX FALLS, S.D., - Augustana Volleyball (6-1) defeated Southwest Baptist (1-6) in straight sets (25-20, 25-19, 25-20) during their first match on day two of the Augustana Showcase.
The Vikings were led by senior
Sydney Hunsley, who posted a team high 11 kills in the sweep of the Bearcats. Junior
Dani Magdzas added 10 kills, while fellow juniors
Becca Finley and
Kelsey Kaufmann each had seven. Augustana ended the match with 51 team kills.
The Vikings had two student-athletes with over 20 assists. Sophomore
Alex Banker earned 22 assists while junior
Anna Sykora added 21.
Tahlyr Banks notched her fourth 20-plus dig performance and seventh straight double-digit digs match. Banks made 24 digs against Southwest Baptist. Junior
Ivy Pearson had 11, while Banker and Sykora each added seven.
Augustana had a 12 total blocks as team, they were led by Hunsley who had five and Kaufmann who had three. Freshman
Tia Dille-Starks also added two blocks to the total.
The Vikings started out slow against the Bearcats trading points for much of the first set before Augustana closed out set one on a 6-1 run.
In set's two and three Augustana took control of the lead early and built upon the momentum they had earned. Augustana would use a pair of four-point runs in both second and third sets to put away the Bearcats of Southwest Baptist.
The Vikings will be back in action this afternoon at 4 p.m. as they round out the 2015 Augustana Showcase taking on the No. 8 ranked Lakers of Grand Valley State. You can follow the match on twitter at
