SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - Augustana volleyball (8-2, 1-1) came away victorious in the first installment of the 2015-16 First Dakota National Bank Mayor's Cup Challenge, sweeping the University of Sioux Falls (8-3, 0-2) 27-25, 25-22 and 25-18.
The No. 25 Vikings came into the contest looking to avenge last season's five-set loss to the Cougars, and they did just that. Augustana started off slow and fell behind early in the first set, before battling back in front of a crowd of over 650 to win set-one 27-25.
Set-two was much like the first as the two teams traded points before Augustana was able to pull away late. In set three the Vikings struck early and held onto the lead throughout the set, capping the Vikings first sweep of the Cougars since 2012.
The Vikings had a balanced attack throughout, and were led by a trio of student-athletes in kills. Juniors
Becca Finley and
Ivy Pearson, along with sophomore
Ashley Wilson each had nine kills for the Vikings. Junior
Dani Magdzas and senior
Sydney Hunsley, each added eight kills to the team's total of 52.
Augustana had five total blocks as a team with Finley and Wilson each stuffing two while Magdzas had one of her own.
Sophomore libero
Tahlyr Banks, had 12 of the teams 32 digs in the match while Pearson had eight and junior
Brittany Cech had seven.
With Augustana's sweep of Sioux Falls, the Vikings earn the first point in the 2015-16 Mayor's Cup Challenge. Augustana has won the cup two years in a row.
The Vikings will be back in action Tuesday Sept. 22 as they travel to Wayne, Neb to take on the Wildcats of Wayne State College. That match in set to begin at 7 p.m. You can follow all the action via
