WAYNE, Neb. - No. 22 Augustana volleyball (9-2, 2-1) went on the road for a midweek match-up with No. 5 Wayne State College (9-2, 2-1) and came away victorious, upsetting Wayne State in four sets, 25-21, 25-15, 12-25, 25-15.
Augustana jumped on the Wildcats early in set one, jumping out to a quick 4-1 lead. The two teams would trade points for much of set one, but the Vikings refused to relinquish the lead, as they never trailed in the set. Augustana would continue their success in set two, again never trailing to Wayne State.
The Wildcats awoke in set three, jumping on Augustana early 8-1, and went on to win the set 25-12. Augustana would once again find their groove in set four. After giving up the first point of the set, Augustana jumped out to a 7-3 lead and held on from there to win the set 25-15, and walked away with the match win, three sets to one.
The Vikings were led by junior
Dani Magdzas who had a career, and match, high 15 kills. Adding to the team's 61 kills, were junior
Becca Finley, who had 12 on the night and sophomore
Ashley Wilson, who added 12 of her own. This was the second time this season the Vikings had three girls with double-digit kills.
Sophomore
Alex Banker and junior
Anna Sykora made it possible for the outside hitters to have big games. Banker led the team with 26 assists while Sykora followed closely with 24.
For the 11th time this season,
Tahlyr Banks led Augustana in digs. She had 21 in the match, coming up with a few diving digs to extend rallies that led to Viking points. Junior
Ivy Pearson was right on Banks' heals for digs, grabbing a career best 20 digs in the match. Pearson's previous career high was four, against St. Cloud State on Oct. 31, 2014.
Augustana totaled seven blocks in the upset win. Finley had four total blocks while Wilson and junior
Brittany Cech each had three.
