SIOUX FALLS, S.D.- No. 22 Augustana (10-2, 3-1) came away victorious Friday night at the Elmen Center. The Vikings swept Upper Iowa (7-6, 1-3), 25-23, 25-23, 25-17, to earn their 10th win of the season and third in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.
Augustana started out slow in both the first and second sets, falling behind 6-1 early in set one. The Vikings trailed for much of the set before junior
Ivy Pearson's service ace started a 4-0 run for the Vikings and tying the match at 13 all. Trailing again late in set one, it was again Pearson serving. Pearson served for five straight points, helping the Vikings take set one 25-23.
The Vikings came out slow in set two falling behind early, 3-0. A few early runs for the Vikings gave them the lead before set two turned into a set of runs. The Vikings held on late to take set two 25-23. Augustana would then set the pace for set three closing out the match with a 25-17 set victory.
Augustana was led by junior
Dani Magdzas, who tied a career high in kills with 15. Senior
Sydney Hunsley, had nine kills and junior
Brittany Cech, had six. The Vikings as a team had 42 kills.
Augustana totaled four blocks in the sweep of the Peacocks with a trio of girls stuffing two Upper Iowa attempts. Junior
Becca Finley, sophomore
Ashley Wilson and Hunsley each had two total blocks. Freshman
Lauren Waite and Magdzas each pitched in with an assisted block.
Sophomore
Tahlyr Banks, led the Vikings in digs with 16 while Cech and Pearson added eight of their own.
Augustana had five aces as a team. Leading the way in aces was Wilson with three, followed by Pearson with two.
Augustana will be back in action tomorrow night as they take on No. 22 Winona State at 5:30 p.m.
