WINONA, Minn.- Meg Thacker scores in the 52nd minute to help Augustana soccer upset No. 18 Winona State 1-0 at Altra Stadium. With the victory the Vikings improves its record to 4-1-1, 2-0-1 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, with the loss Winona State drops to 5-1, 2-1 in the NSIC.
The first half was very tense as both team try to find a rhythm to the game. In the 30th minute
Stephanie Stevens had a chance to put the Vikings ahead but it hit the crossbar. Just before the half, the Warriors Kati Baker shot hits the post and the game remains scoreless.
Early in the second half Thacker took a long ball pass from
Hannah Keirstead and shot one just outside the box to give Augustana the 1-0 lead. This was Thacker's first goal of the season.
After the goal, Winona State had a couple of corner kicks to tie it up quickly but the Augustana defense clamped down.
After that the Vikings defense stifled the Warriors offense limiting them to just five shots the entire half. This is the second year in a row Augustana has shutout Winona State.
With this victory Augustana secured its first ever road win against Winona State. The Vikings had previously been outscored 2.37-0.37 in eight contests at the Warriors' home.
Augustana will be at home next weekend to battle NSIC opponents MSU Moorhead and Northern State.
