Plonsky Nets Quick Overtime Goal Giving the Vikings a 2-1 Victory

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – It took until overtime, but Augustana soccer pushed their winning streak to five games defeating Northern State, 2-1. The Vikings improved to 6-3-1 (5-1-1 NSIC) on the season.

It was a fast paced match between the Vikings and Wolves with both team continuously applying pressure to the other side. There were a combined 48 shots with Augustana edging out Northern State 30-18 and putting 15 shots on goal compared to 12 by the Wolves. The 30 shots and 15 shots on goal were both season-highs for the Vikings.

Northern State got the scoring started on a goal by Stephany Estrada less than five minutes into the second half.

The Vikings continued to put pressure on the Wolves offensively and it paid off in the 75th minute when Augustana tied it up on a Rebecca Gasper header that found the back of the net. Emily Jacobson recorded the assist when she found Gasper crashing the net feeding her a perfect pass.

Both sides went back-and-forth for the rest of the second half but there was no scoring sending the game into overtime.

The overtime period was over in the blink of an eye. Julie Plonsky took a Gasper pass and put it into the back of the net a little over two minutes into overtime giving the Vikings the 2-1 win.

Offensively, Augustana was led by Ellie Knowles with seven shots and four shots on goal. Gasper paced the Vikings with three points.

Taylor Machacek was stout in goal as she recorded a season-high 11 saves. During the five match winning streak Machacek has only allowed two goals and has recorded three shutouts, while notching 28 saves.

Next up for the Vikings will be a road matchup against Concordia-St. Paul. The match will be in St. Paul, Minn. on Oct. 7 at 7 p.m.
