DULUTH, Minn. – Augustana soccer played to their second consecutive draw, finishing in a 1-1 tie at Minnesota Duluth on Sunday. The Vikings moved to 9-4-3 (8-2-3 NSIC) on the season.
The Vikings are currently in fourth place in the NSIC standings with 27 conference points and one week to play. The top-four teams in the NSIC host the first round of the conference tournament and the top team hosts the semifinals and finals.
The first half was a defensive battle as Minnesota Duluth outshot Augustana 2-0. Duluth scored a goal late in the first half to give them a 1-0 lead going into halftime.
In the second half the Vikings survived an onslaught on Bulldog shots as Duluth outshot Augustana 11-5 and had eight shots on goal compared to just three by the Vikings.
In the 80th minute the Vikings made one of their three second half shots on goal count as
Mackenzie Main took a
Grace Bender pass and buried a header in the back of the net tying the match up at 1-1. It was Main's second goal in as many games and it was Bender's first career assist.
Overtime ended up being a defensive stalemate with the game ending in a 1-1 tie.
Offensively, Minnesota Duluth outshot Augustana 14-8 and had 10 shots on goal compared to five by the Vikings. Main and
Ellie Knowles were the only Vikings with multiple shots as both finished with two.
Defensively,
Nicole Grinager made her second career start in goal for Augustana. Grinager held her own in the net recording nine saves on 14 shots.
Next week is the last week of the regular season for the Vikings. Augustana will host Southwest Minnesota State on Friday, Oct. 28 at 3 p.m. at Morstad Field for their final home contest of the season. To close out the season the Vikings will take on crosstown rival Sioux Falls on their home turf on Sunday, Oct. 30 at 1 p.m.
