SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Redshirt freshman
Allie Marshall had yet to appear in a match for the Augustana Vikings, until Friday afternoon's 5-1 victory over SMSU when she did something no one else has accomplished in school history. Marshall notched the ninth hat trick in school history, but she is the first Viking to do it in her team debut.
Augustana improved to 10-4-3 (9-2-3 NSIC) on the season and solidified their position in the top-four of the NSIC standings. The Vikings earned their fourth consecutive 10-win season and the program's sixth in their 17 year history.
SMSU got the scoring starting in the first half when the Vikings were called for a foul in the goalie's box. The Mustang's went on to convert the penalty kick and take a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute.
Augustana would answer in the 26th minute when
Grace Behm, making her first career start, took a pass from
Katie Ortgies and squeezed it between the post and the goalie's outreached hands to tie the match up.
In the 28th minute coach
Brandon Barkus went to his bench looking for a spark and subbing in six players. The move paid off for Barkus as the subs put up three more goals and taking a 4-1 lead going into halftime.
Marshall scored her first goal on the day on a deflected pass and buried it into the back of the net. 50 seconds later Marshall added her second goal on the day scoring on a penalty kick.
Julie Plonsky closed the scoring for the half when she put a
Samantha Schorzman cross and scored from eight yards out.
Augustana scored four goals in the first half for the first time since Sept. 21, 2013 when they accomplished that same feat in a 6-1 victory over MSU Moorhead.
Marshall would conclude the scoring for the day in the 63rd minute when she took a pass from
Jensen Froehlich and put it into the back of the net and completing her hat trick.
The freshmen were the X-factors for the Vikings on Friday as they accounted for 11 of the 13. Marshall led the way with six points and Behm finished with two points. Ortgies, Schorzman and Froehlich each had one point for the Vikings.
Taylor Machacek was solid in the net again for Augustana. Machacek improved to 9-4-2 on the season as she recorded four saves on eight shots faced.
The Vikings outshot the Mustangs 25-8 and had eight shots on goal compared to five by SMSU.
Augustana will wrap up the regular season against crosstown rival Sioux Falls on Sunday, Oct. 30 at 1 p.m. at the USF Soccer Field.
