MOORHEAD, Minn. - In a clash of Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference titans, the No. 1 ranked Vikings of Augustana (20-2, 17-1 NSIC) battled the noise of an opposing arena to get a huge win against one of the Vikings largest rivals, 94-86.
Â
In the first half the two teams traded the punches that everyone had anticipated. The Dragons got on the board first but the Vikings matched it with a 5-0 run of their own. This back-and-forth affair continued until midway through the first half when the Vikings were able to use an 8-2 run to jump out to an eight-point advantage.
Â
MSU Moorhead (23-4, 14-3 NSIC) didn't go away however, as they were able to mount an 8-0 run with under seven minutes of action left in the half, cutting the Viking lead to just two at 35-33. The Dragons would get the final six points of the half but Augustana would go into the locker room with the lead 46-43.
Â
The second half opened up with a big triple from sophomore point guard
Jordan Spencer, which would be the start of an early Viking 10-2 run. For every run that the Vikings were able to string together, the Dragons would have one of their own. With the Vikings up nine and just under 10 minutes to play MSUM used a 4-0 run to get the game to within five, this would be the closest they would get the rest of the night. Augustana would make the clutch free-throws when they needed them as
Casey Schilling and
Adam Beyer each would knock down two late free-throws to help seal the victory for the Vikings.
VIKINGS OF NOTEDan Jansen put on a show for the Vikings with 25-points, seven rebounds and six assists. But the one shining moment for Jansen came late in the second half when he caught a pass inside, spun and layed in for two. Those two points put Jansen in the Augustana record books as the Vikings all-time leading scorer with 1,965 career points
Â
Casey Schilling followed up his career night in Aberdeen with yet another stellar night. Schilling posted 26-points and 13 rebounds for his second straight double-double and the 30th of his career. With his 26 points scored he moves into 6th all-time on the Augustana scoreing list.
