Baseball splits Saturday's doubleheader with Truman State after falling in game two

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - Ryan Hamilton was lights out on the mound in game one against the Truman Bulldogs, leading the Vikings to an 8-0 win in game one. But after jumping out to a 7-0 lead in game two, the Bulldogs scored nine runs in four innings to defeat the Vikings 9-8 in game two.

GAME ONE

In what was a low scoring affair that was dominated by pitching in the first six innings, The Vikings exploded for five runs in the seventh to blow the game open. Ryan Hamilton was locked in from the first pitch as his seven inning, complete game shutout led the Vikings to an 8-0 win over Truman State in game one of Saturday's doubleheader.

Augustana was the first team to get on the scoreboard in fourth inning. Alex Fink led things off with a single up the middle, later advancing to second on a wild pitch. One batter later Alex Beals grounded out but did enough to score Fink and give the Vikings an early 1-0 lead.

Augustana added some insurance runs in the top of the sixth inning when Patrick Fiala homered to left field, giving the Vikings a 2-0 lead. The sixth inning continued to be kind to the Vikings when Alex Beals doubled to left field. Beals scored the the third run of the game after he was driven in by Lucas Barry who singled through the left side.

The Vikings broke the game open in the seventh inning after Augustana was able to plate five runs. The Vikings first run of the inning came on a bases loaded walk by Fink that brought in Carter Wevik, who led the inning off being hit by a pitch. Fiala drove in the next two runs on a single to left field. Fink scored the Vikings seventh run of the ball game thanks in part to a Bulldog throwing error. The Final run of the game was driven in by TJ Davis who singled, scoring Beals to make the final score 8-0 Augustana.

VIKING OF NOTE
Ryan Hamilton was locked in from the get go as he pitched the first complete game for the Vikings this season. Hamilton lasted the full seven innings and threw 98 pitches in the game. He gave up just five hits and one walk and didn't allow a run. He picked up four strikeouts on the day and forced six ground outs and nine fly outs

VIKING NOTABLES
• Hamilton pitched the second complete game shutout of his career. It was the seventh complete game of his career
• Augustana committed just one error to the Bulldogs four
• The Vikings turned one double play
• Patrick O'Donnell hit his fifth double of the season, Beals hit his third and Jacob James hit his first
• Fiala hit his second home run of the season
 

GAME TWO

After scoring five runs in the final inning of game one, the Vikings stayed hot in game two, jumping out to an early 7-0 lead thanks to a six-run third inning.

Augustana scored first for the second straight game as a Ryan Menssen grounded out scored Fiala who led the second inning off with a single. A triple by Tyler Field and a  walked by Justin Warne jump started the third inning for the Vikings. Following Warne's walk, O'Donnell singled to the right side scoring fields and Fink singled to score Warne. The Vikings scored their third run of the inning after Barry singled. James then earned two RBI's after he singled to center. The Vikings final run of the inning came as Field came up to bat for the second time in the inning getting a single and driving in Barry.

Truman State had a big inning of their own in the bottom half of the third inning that was highlighted by a grand slam from Jason Priest. The Bulldogs were able to plate five runs in the third and added another in the fourth to pull with a run.

The Vikings picked up another run in fifth inning on a Warne Sac fly to center field to get their two run advantage back but Truman State picked two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning to tie the game at eight.

Truman State would get the game's final run in the sixth inning when Jason Priest drew a walk with the bases loaded to make the score 9-8. The Vikings were unable to get anything going in the final three innings, splitting Saturday's doubleheader with Truman State.

Augustana and Truman State will be back on the diamond tomorrow afternoon for the final two games of their four game series. First pitch of tomorrow's doubleheader is scheduled for noon.
