MINOT, N.D. - The Augustana softball's (16-10, 3-1 NSIC) offense was on full display Thursday as the Vikings earned two wins against Minot State (11-9, 0-2 NSIC). Augustana defeated the Beavers 8-0 in game one and 10-6 in game two.
GAME ONEThe Augustana University softball team picked up 8-0 victory Thursday in game one of the their doubleheader against Minot State.
Carley Pickett gave up just one hit in the five inning contest to earn her ninth win of the season.
Augustana got the offense rolling quickly on Thursday as
Carly Peterson drew a leadoff walk while Pickett followed that up with a single to the left side.The Vikings would get on the scoreboard after
Sarah Kennedy doubled to left center, scoring Peterson.
Shannon Peterson cleared the bases in the first inning when she connect on a pitched and sent it flying over the left field fence to give the Vikings a 4-0 lead.
After going scoreless in the second the Vikings once again found their offensive groove in the third inning. In the inning the first three Viking hitters all reached base, Kennedy by way of a single,
Maggie Kadrlik was hit by a pitch and Shannon Peterson on a single to center.
With the bases loaded
Kaylea Schorr singled to the left side, scoring Kennedy and keeping the bases loaded. The next two Augustana runs were scored on passed balls. Schorr would be the last Viking to score when she was driven in by
Maddie Merriam who grounded out.
GAME TWOMuch like game one, the offense was rolling for the Vikings in game two. Augustana scored early and often scoring at least one run in each of the first five innings.
In the first inning Pickett reached by way of a walk before advancing to second on a Kennedy single. Shannon Peterson brought home the first two Viking runs when she reached base on an error by the Beaver shortstop. Peterson would then be driven on a Merriam single.
In the second inning Augustana loaded the bases on a single from
Abby Chandler followed by
Carly Peterson reaching on a fielder's choice and another single from Pickett. Next up for the Vikings was Kennedy and she connect on a pitch for grand slam to make it 7-0 Vikings after the top of the second inning.
Minot State scored one in the bottom of the second but the Vikings were able to score one run in each of the next three innings. Minot State didn't go away however scoring three in the bottom of the fifth inning on a home run by Rachel Burdette to make it 10-4 Vikings. Minot State scored one run in each of the final two innings but it wasn't enough as Augustana would walk away with a 10-6 win.
Augustana used three pitchers in game two.
Karlee Koopman got the start tossing two innings and giving up one run.
Maggie Dunnett pitched the next four innings giving up four earned runs and Pickett closed out the game pitching the final two innings giving up just one run.
UP NEXTAugustana will head to Bismarck, N.D. to take on the University of Mary tomorrow afternoon. Tomorrow's doubleheader is scheduled for a noon start.
