Baseball rallies in the ninth to earn a split with Minnesota State Wednesday

MANKATO, Minn. - After trailing by a run entering the ninth inning, Augustana baseball (20-8, 11-1 NSIC) rallied to score seven runs on five hits to defeat Minnesota State (18-11, 9-6 NSIC) and split their midweek doubleheader with the Mavericks.

Game One 

The Augustana University baseball team saw its season long 11-game winning streak come to an end Wednesday afternoon as they fell to Minnesota State 6-2 in game one of the doubleheader.

Augustana fell into an early hole Wednesday afternoon against Minnesota State as the Mavericks took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning when Eric Peterson scored on a wild pitch. They later added to their lead in the fourth scoring three runs.

The Vikings finally got on the board in the fifth inning when Alex Fink singled to right field scoring Lucas Wilber who led off the inning with a single to left field.

In the fifth inning the Vikings would score their final run of game one off the bat of Alex Beals who led off the inning with a home run. MSU scored two more runs in the bottom of the sixth to make the final score 6-2 Mavericks.

Game Two

After falling in game one and not scoring till the fifth inning of game one, Augustana got on the scoreboard in the first inning of game two.

Justin Warne led off game two with a double down the right field line and eventually advancing to third in a Patrick O'Donnell ground out. Fink earned an RBI when he drove in Warne on a ground out to the pitcher. Later in the inning Beals singled to right field scoring Patrick Fiala who reached on a triple to center field.

With a 2-0 lead the Vikings were able to keep the Mavericks off the scoreboard until the third inning. In the third MSU tied the game at two on a 2-run single by Peterson. Minnesota State took a 3-2 lead in the fifth thanks in part to a bases loaded walk.

The Vikings tied the ball game at three in the seventh inning. Beals led off the inning with a triple to right center, later scoring when Lucas Barry singled through the right side for an RBI. The lead was short lived though as MSU retook the lead in the bottom of the seventh on a RBI single from Luke Waldek making it 4-3.

Augustana didn't go away quietly though, and they began their comeback in the top of the ninth. The Vikings began the inning with both Fiala and Beals being hit by a pitch. Fiala scored on an RBI ground out by Field, tying the game at four. Lucas Barry and Beals then switched places as Barry hit a triple to make it 5-4 Vikings.

The Vikings made it 6-4 after TJ Davis continued the rally with a single down the left field line, scoring Barry. After Warne and O'Donnell each singled, loading the bases, Fink hit a bases clearing double to right center, making it 9-4 Vikings. Augustana reached the double-digit scoring mark when Beals singled with two out scoring Fink. In the bottom of the inning Zach Reeg pitched around a lead off walk to help secure the Vikings 10-4 win.
