Four Second Half Goals Propels Augustana Soccer to First NSIC Win on the Season

BISMARCK, N.D. – It was a tale of two halves in Bismarck, N.D. on Sunday and the Vikings used a strong second half to seal their first NSIC victory on the season. Augustana defeated U-Mary, 4-1, and improved to 2-3-1 (1-1-1 NSIC) on the season.

Augustana got goals from Emily Jacobson, Courtney Almendinger and Samantha Tymkowicz. The Vikings registered their fourth goal on an own goal by U-Mary.

Taylor Machacek registered six saves for the second consecutive day and notched her second victory on the season.

The Vikings outshot the Marauders 13-11 and each team managed seven shots on goal. The big statistical difference in the match was in corner kicks as Augustana had 11 to just two by the Marauders.

U-Mary got the scoring started with a goal in the 28th minute. In the first half the Marauders and the Vikings each had six shots, but U-Mary put three shots on goal compared to just one by Augustana.

The second half was all Augustana. Jacobson tied the game in the 61st minute firing a shot from 20 yards out just out of reach of the goalkeepers' hands.

Almendinger gave the Vikings a 2-1 lead in the 75th minute when she scored off of a corner kick. The Vikings put the game out of reach in the 83rd minute when U-Mary scored an own goal and 23 seconds later Tymkowicz fired a shot from 25 yards out giving the Vikings a 4-1 victory.

Augustana outshot U-Mary in the second half 7-5 with six shots on goal compared to just four by the Marauders.

Augustana next game will be their home opener at Morstad Field on Friday, Sept. 23 at 4 p.m. The Vikings will take on NSIC foe Upper Iowa.
