SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – For Augustana soccer playing their home opener on Friday was well worth the wait. The Vikings defeated Upper Iowa, 3-0, in their latest home opener in team history. Augustana gets back to .500 with the win improving their record to 3-3-1 (2-1-1 NSIC).
Junior Taylor Machacek had her best game of the season recording four saves and posting her first shutout of the year. Machacek posted an Augustana record 11 shutouts last season.
Junior Samantha Tymkowicz got the scoring started for the Vikings with a goal in the 21st minute. Junior Kallie Nordberg assisted on the goal with cross into the box where Tymkowicz tapped the ball passed the Peacock goalie giving Augustana a 1-0 lead.
The second half saw a pair of sophomores score their first career goals. Reiley Klose scored on a breakaway in the 69th minute and Rebecca Gasper scored on a rebound of the post in the 89th minute.
The Vikings outshot the Peacocks 20-8 with 12 shots on goal compared to four by Upper Iowa. Augustana improves to 10-6-1 in home openers and 9-2 under head coach Brandon Barkus.
Augustana in back in action on Sunday, Sept. 25 traveling Winona, Minn. to take on the Winona State Warriors at 1 p.m.
