Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Kelly Shipp

Women's Basketball defeats Upper Iowa 65-49 in Fayette, Iowa Friday

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - Augustana and Upper Iowa played a tightly contest ball game for much of the contest but the Vikings depth and athleticism proved to be too much as Augustana (14-6,9-4 NSIC) was able to pull away late, defeating Upper Iowa 65-49 on the road.

The Vikings put the first points on the board against the Peacock's (2-15,2-11 NSIC) after Shelby Selland knocked down an early triple. Following the early lead, Upper Iowa scored five in row to take a 5-3 lead. Upper Iowa held onto the lead for the next few minutes until Augustana was able to tie it at 10 on a three from Allie Koehn. The tie game didn't last long though as Upper Iowa scored the final five points of the quarter, taking a 15-12 lead into the second.

Upper Iowa scored first in the second and extended their lead to 17 but then Augustana began to find their rhythm. The Vikings got to within a point after Lynsey Prosser hit a three and Logan O'Farrell scored on a layup. Upper Iowa and Augustana then traded buckets before Logan drilled a triple to give Augustana a 24-23 lead with just over five minutes left in the period. Shortly after, the Vikings again trailed by three until Prosser hit a three to tie it at 27 and spark a 10-0 run to end the quarter and give the Vikings a 34-27 lead at halftime.

The Peacocks scored first out of the locker room, but it was Augustana who went on a quick 6-2 run to open the third-quarter. Upper Iowa pulled to within four at 40-36 until Selland and Logan hit back-to-back shots to extend the Viking lead to eight once again. Prosser scored on a layup with 3:55 left in the third to make it 46-38, but that would be the Vikings final points of the quarter. Upper Iowa scored once more as the Vikings went into the fourth with a 46-40 lead.

The Vikings shot themselves out of the four-minute scoring drought when Logan knocked down a jumper on the first possession of the fourth quarter. Augustana earned their first double-digit lead of the game a few plays later when Sydney Rome blocked a shot on defense and then drilled a triple on the offensive end. The Vikings maintained a double-digit lead for most of the final quarter, eventually pulling away to earn a 65-49 victory against Upper Iowa.
