BEMIDJI, Minn. - The Augustana women's soccer team (9-2-3, 8-1-2 NSIC) used a penalty kick goal by junior
Rebekah Thoresen late in the second half to draw even with No. 22 Bemidji State (11-0-2, 9-0-2 NSIC) in Bemidji, Minn. on Sunday afternoon.
Down 1-0 in the 83rd minute, Augustana was furiously trying to tie the match and drew a foul in the box. Thoresen stepped up for the penalty kick and buried it into the right side of the net to tie the match up for the Vikings. It was Thoresen's fourth goal of the season, tying her for the team lead with
Samantha Tymkowicz.
Augustana had its opportunities in overtime, but couldn't capitalize, settling for a 1-1 tie against ranked and unbeaten Beavers of Bemidji State. The Vikings held the Beavers without a shot in the two overtime periods and had four shots of their own.
The Beavers tallied their lone goal of the contest in the 25th minute on Rachael Norton's 10th goal of the season. Norton scored on an Allyson Smith pass that was deflected by goalie
Taylor Machacek.
The Vikings haven't lost in their last 16 overtime games (8-0-8). Augustana has played in four overtime games this season (1-0-3) and it was their first such game since Sept. 10 against Emporia State.
Thoresen and
Kelly Partington led the Vikings in shots with five apiece, followed by Tymkowicz with three. Machacek finished the match with four saves.
Augustana returns home next weekend for matchups against Minnesota Duluth and St. Cloud State. The Vikings will celebrate their seniors against the Bulldogs on Saturday, Oct. 21 at 11 a.m. at Morstad Field for Senior Day. The Vikings wrap up the weekend against St. Cloud State on Sunday, Oct. 22 at 1 p.m.
