SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The Augustana soccer team (8-1-2, 7-0-1 NSIC) broke out offensively on Friday afternoon with a 5-2 victory over Concordia-St. Paul (6-4-1, 4-3-1 NSIC). The Vikings scored a season-high five goals in the contest by five different student-athletes.
Augustana picked up its eighth consecutive win on the season relying on the offense more than the defense for the first time during the streak. The Vikings saw their eight match shutout streak come to an end on a Golden Bear's goal in the 81st minute. Augustana had held opponents scoreless for 859:30 straight minutes during their streak.
Rebekah Thoresen got the scoring started for the Vikings with a penalty kick goal in the 28th minute. One minute and five seconds later
Hannah Keirstead put the Vikings up 2-0 season, scoring on a
Rebecca Gasper corner kick. It is only the second time this season Augustana has scored multiple goals in a match.
Reiley Klose and
Grace Behm added goals on their own early in the second half to give the Vikings a commanding 4-0 lead. Concordia-St. Paul would add two goals in the 81st and the 88th minute to shrink the Vikings lead to two goals.
Kelly Partington capped off the offensive display with a penalty kick goal with 41 seconds left in the contest, to give the Vikings a 5-2 victory.
Partington recorded her first career goal and assist on the afternoon and had a team season-high three points on the day. Gasper and
Samantha Tymkowicz also had assists on the day.
The Vikings were outshot for just the second time this season, as the Golden Bears outshot the Vikings, 18-14. Augustana was more accurate with nine shots on goal compared to six by Concordia-St. Paul.
Augustana returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 8 for a battle for first in the NSIC against No. 11 Minnesota State (9-1-1, 7-0-1 NSIC) in Mankato, Minn. at 1 p.m.
