Soccer Advances to NCAA Second Round after Outlasting Bemidji State in Penalty Kicks

WARRENSBURG, Mo. - The No. 4 seed Augustana women's soccer team (14-3-5) played No. 5 seed Bemidji State (15-1-4) to their second tie against each other on the season, but the Vikings prevailed 5-3 in the shootout to advance to the second round of the NCAA tournament.

For the first time in school history Augustana was faced with the task of having to decide a match on penalty kicks. The Vikings wouldn't miss and Taylor Machacek came up with a clutch save to give the Vikings the victory over the Beavers.

Mackenzie Main, Rebekah Thoresen, Kelly Partington, Courtney Almendinger and Brooke Bleeker all made their penalty kicks, in that order, while Machack saved Bemidji State's second attempt by NSIC Freshman of the Year Allyson Smith, to give the Vikings a 5-3 shootout victory.

The Vikings extended their single season shutout record to 14 games and advanced in the NCAA tournament for the second time in school history. Augustana recorded a win over Harding in the NCAA tournament in 2015.

Bemidji State outpaced Augustana in shots 23-17, but the Vikings had nine shots on goal compared to eight by the Beavers. Machacek finished the match with eight saves.

The Vikings advance to the NCAA Second Round to take on No. 1 seed Central Missouri in Warrensburg on Sunday at 1 p.m.
