Spencer Double-Double Paces Vikings in Win over Montevallo

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Senior Jordan Spencer recorded his sixth-career double-double, scoring 14 points and adding 15 assists, and he got plenty of help in the Vikings 88-69 win over the Falcons on Saturday at the Small College Basketball Hall of Fame Classic in Evansville, Indiana.

John Warren, who went a perfect 8 for 8 from the field, including 5 for 5 from deep, added a game-high 21 points, Steven Schaefer 17 and Adam Dykman 10, as nine different Vikings scored in the win, which boosts their record to 2-0 on the season, while the Falcons fall to 0-2.

Montevallo won the tip and scored on its first four possessions, but the Vikings kept pace thanks to Warren, who drilled a trio 3-pointers and added another field goal in the first five minutes of the game, which resulted in a 15-11 Augustana lead less than five minutes into the contest.

The Falcons fired back though, and took a 20-19 lead with an old fashioned 3-point play midway through the half, and held on to that lead until Dykman hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key a few minutes later, the first of seven straight points for the sophomore transfer.

Later in the half, Schaefer hit a pair of triples in consecutive trips down the floor to cap an 8-0 spurt and give the Vikings a 34-25 lead with six minutes left in a half, a lead that grow to as many as 13 points at 43-30, before Augustana took a 45-35 lead into halftime.

The Vikings quickly got the lead back to 13 points early in the second half, only to see the Falcons come right back with a 6-0 run to cut it to seven at 50-43 less than three minutes into the final frame, but it didn't last, as the Vikings countered with a 10-0 run to go up 60-43 with 14:52 on the clock, drawing a timeout from the Montevallo bench.

The run ended at 10, but the lead grew to as many as 21 points, while the Falcons never cut the deficit to fewer than 10 the rest of the way.

Jeremiah Curtis led the Falcons with 18 points, with Jamar Gilbert adding 12, DeShawn Jones 11 and Julio Guity 10 points in the loss.

The Vikings get 10 day off before returning to action on Tuesday, Nov. 14, when they open their home schedule against Peru State in the Elmen Center at 7 p.m .
