Softball picks up a pair of wins on day three in Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. – Augustana University softball picked up a pair of wins in Florida on the third day of its trip on Tuesday. The Vikings had two games rained out on Monday before returning to action today. Augustana (7-6) defeated Seton Hill 3-0 before picking up a 3-1 win over Merrimack in the nightcap.

Augustana will conclude its trip to the Sunshine State with another twinbill on Wednesday.

Game one
Augustana got a complete-game shutout from Lexy Pederson in a 3-0 win over Seton Hill to help the Vikings improve to 6-6 on the year. Pederson struck out five and allowed just two hits on the afternoon.

Shannon Petersen led the Vikings at the plate, finishing 3 for 3 with a double and two runs scored.

Augustana broke through with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning to take a 2-0 lead. Kaylea Schorr led off the inning with a single. Two batters and two outs later, Petersen singled and Schorr came around to score on a throwing error by the left fielder to put the Vikings on the board. Petersen scored the second run of the inning after moving to third on a wild pitch and coming home on a throwing error by the catcher.

Pederson surrendered the second and only other Seton Hill hit of the game in the top of the fourth as the two teams played to two and a half scoreless innings before the Vikings added a run in the bottom of the sixth.

Petersen doubled to lead off the inning for the Vikings and came around to score when Kylie Rome stole second, forcing a throw and allowing Petersen to put the Vikings up 3-0. Seton Hill got a leadoff walk in the top of the seventh but Pederson got a double play to end the game.

Game two
The Vikings got another strong pitching performance in the second game of the day, this time from freshman Olivia Wolters. Wolters earned the complete-game victory while striking out four patters and allowing just one run on three hits in a 3-1 Augustana win.

Augustana finished the game with seven hits, including a 2 for 4 day from Sarah Kennedy. Kennedy hit a pair of doubles and drove in two of Augustana's three runs.

Merrimack opened the scoring on the night with a two-out RBI double by Kaleigh Finigan giving the Warriors a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second.

The Vikings responded with a pair of runs in the top of the third inning, getting a two-RBI double from Kennedy that gave Augustana a 2-1 lead.

Each team left a runner on in the fourth and the Vikings added a run in the top of the fifth to extend their lead to 3-1. Kaylea Schorr singled with one out in the inning and moved up to third on a ground-rule double by Kennedy. Christina Pickett drove in the third run of the game for the Vikings with a sacrifice fly to center to bring Schorr across the plate.

Merrimack got a leadoff single in the seventh but the Vikings once again turned a double-play in the final frame to get out of the inning without any damage done.

Augustana concludes its trip to Florida on Wednesday with two more games. The Vikings will take on Saint Thomas Aquinas at 12 p.m. (CT) before squaring-off against Bloomsburg at 2:30 p.m. (CT).
