SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The Augustana cross country team used a strong team effort to get the 2017 season off on the right foot.
Weather threatened to dampen the seventh annual Augustana Twilight at Yankton Trail Park. The rain would subside and the Vikings were able to demonstrate what they had been working on in training … a pack mentality.
In the women's race, the Vikings were led by newcomer
Emily Tromp who finished in 37th in the 5k with a time of 18:56.46. Finishing not far behind Tromp were
Mackenzie Kelly (39th),
Courtney Hottovy (41st) and
Rebekah Rairdon (44th). Rounding out the Viking women top-five was
Cassidy Soli at 64th.
On the men's side the pack finished right on each other's heels.
Aaron Runge (19th),
Jesus Urtusuastegui (20th),
Alec Kray (21st),
Logan Burns (22nd),
Nate Souther (23rd) and
Nick Larsen (25th) all finished .62 seconds apart. Other Vikings not far behind were
Sean Heaton (29th) and
Skylar DeJong (36th).
The Vikings next compete in two weeks, traveling to Lincoln, Neb., for the Woody Greeno Invite, hosted by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln on Sept. 16.
