Men’s Cross Country Race Past the Competition at the Griak Invite; Women Take 4th

MINNEAPOLIS - The Augustana men's cross country team turned in a dominating effort at the Roy Griak Invitational in Minneapolis, Minn. with four top-10 finishers and a first place team finish. The women also had an impressive performance finishing in fourth place and in front of a pair of ranked teams.

The Augustana men rolled to a decisive team victory on Saturday with 43 points and finished 105 points ahead of the second place team, Central Missouri. The women finished in fourth place with 135 points.

"It was a great performance by our teams today at one of the best meets in the nation," head coach Tracy Hellman said of his teams effort on Saturday. "I thought our women had a great race with lots of room for improvement. Our men were absolutely dominating and had such a confidence in the race. I'm excited to see what these teams do when we reach championship season."

Alec Kray led the Viking pack of four top-10 finishers, placing in third with a time of 26:09. Other top-10 finishers were Aaron Runge (fourth), Nick Larsen (sixth) and Jesus Urtusuastegui (ninth). Sean Heaton rounded out the team scoring with a 21st place finish. The top-five runners for the Vikings put up an incredible spread of 34 seconds.

No. 18 Augustana finished in front of No. 15 Sioux Falls (third) and No. 13 Simon Fraser (sixth).

Mackenzie Kelly led the women's team with an impressive fourth place finish with a time of 22:49.4. Filing in behind Kelly were Emily Tromp (17th), Claire Boersma (30th), Cassidy Soli (36th) and Courtney Hottovy (48th) to round out the team scoring for the Vikings.

No. 5 Simon Fraser took first in the women's race. Unranked Pittsburg State and No. 4 U-Mary finished right ahead of Augustana. The Vikings finished in front of two ranked opponents, No. 19 Northern Michigan (fifth) and No. 22 Minnesota Duluth (ninth).

Augustana will have next weekend off before returning to Minnesota for the Bob Waxlax Invite in St. Cloud, Minn. on Friday, Oct. 6.
