Vikings Battle #17 Fort Hays State to a Scoreless Tie

MINOT, N.D. - The Augustana soccer team faced its second ranked opponent on the season and came away with a better result.

The Vikings took on No. 17 Fort Hays State in the first match of the Minot State Classic in Minot, N.D. and played the Tigers to a scoreless tie.

Both Augustana and Fort Hays State were fairly accurate on the afternoon, but neither squad could produce a goal. The Vikings recorded 14 shots with nine shots on goal and the Tigers produced nine shots with five shots on goal.

It was a defensive battle in the first half as both teams went scoreless. The Vikings defense was particularly good only allowing two shots in the period. Augustana recorded six shots and five shots on goal in the first half.

The second half was more of the same between the Vikings and Tigers. Augustana outshot Fort Hays State five to four, but the Tigers had two shots on goal compared to one by the Vikings.

In the overtime periods, the Vikings and Tigers had an identical number of shots with three apiece. All of Augustana's overtime shots were on goal and Fort Hays State had two shots on goal.

Ellie Knowles and Grace Behm were the only Vikings to record multiple shots. Knowles led the way with five shots and Behm had four. Taylor Machacek finished the evening with five saves.

The Vikings continue the Minot State Classic at Herb Parker Stadium on Sunday, Sept. 10 at 11 a.m. against Emporia State.
