The Vikings fall to the Warriors in Four

Augustana is now 10-16 (5-13 NSIC)


SIOUX FALLS, S.D.-- Entering their final home match of the 2018 season, the Augustana Volleyball team started strong, but ultimately fell 3-1 (25-21, 22-25, 16-25, 14-25) to Winona State. The loss drops Augustana to 10-16 (5-13 NSIC) on the year and brings Winona State to 13-13 (10-8 NSIC).

Playing on senior day, the Vikings took an early lead at 10-8. Although the Warriors stormed back to take a 13-10 lead, Augustana senior Hanna Justesen buried an ace and gave the Vikings a 22-19 lead. The Vikings held on to take the first set 25-21. Augie hit .194% in the first set.

Set two saw back-n-forth action early, but the Warriors got a bit of separation when they pulled ahead 15-11. Augustana responded putting together 6-0 run to take 17-15 lead. The run featured an ace from Courtney Place and a tandem block from Grace Haberland and Abby Benson. The teams were deadlocked at 20 when the Vikings called their second timeout. The Warriors finished the set strong to get win 25-22 to even the match at 1-1.

The Warriors took the momentum in the final two sets, racking up 27 kills and limiting Augustana to just a .025 hitting percentage. The Warriors took the third set with a 25-16 win, and secured the win with a final set 25-14 win.

Courtney Place led the Vikings with nine kills and Sophia Terwilleger had 13 digs. Avery Thorson had 29 assists for Augustana. Overall, the Vikings had 154 total attacks and 38 kills.

Taylor Goar and Megan Flom lead the Warriors with 15 and 14 kills respectively. Becca Pagel racked up 33 digs to lead Winona State.

The Vikings will be back in action next weekend when they travel to No. 1 Concordia-St. Paul on Friday, and wrap up the regular season by visiting Minnesota State on Saturday.
