Augustana Rallies to tie Game in Regulation, but Draws with Upper Iowa

The Vikings are still 7-3-2 (6-2-1 NSIC) on the year.

FAYETTE, Iowa. -- Playing on the road for the second time in three days, the Augustana women's soccer team used a late second half goal to push the game into overtime, but ultimately ended with a 1-1 draw against Upper Iowa on Sunday. The tie brings the Vikings to 7-3-2 (6-2-1 NSIC) on the year.

Trailing into the 89th minute, the Vikings got some magic from Senior Rebekah Thoresen to tie the game up. With less than a minute to go, Peyton Stenzel played a great ball to Thoresen on the left side, and the senior buried a shot to the far post for the equalizer. Without question, the senior picked a great time for her first goal of the season and sixth of her career.

Heading into overtime, the Vikings had the momentum. Although Augustana picked up seven shots with three on net, they were not able to find the game winner. Vikings head coach Brandon Barkus was pleased the team battled back, but knows there's room for improvement. "It's tough when we need nearly 30 shots to score," Barkus said, "I'm confident our team will find a way to score more goals moving forward." Augustana, who played in their 7th overtime game of the year, is now 3-2-2 playing in extra time in 2018.

Sunday afternoons match at Pattison Field saw both sides start with solid offensive chances. Through the first half, the Vikings racked up nine shots and five on goal. Augustana also managed three corner kicks in the first half, but was not able to find the back of the net early on. Senior defender Lauren Brownrigg led the Vikings with three chances on the goal in the first half. The Vikings defense, who has already been recognized with two Northern Sun Player of the Week honors, was also stout in the first half, limiting the peacocks to just a few shots on net.

Heading into the second half, both sides looked to take control on the offensive end. At the 54 minute mark, Upper Iowa's Laura Murray dribbled along the left side, fired and scored above the head of goalie Meghan Kuntz. It's Murray's first goal of her career. Hoping to pick up the pace, the Vikings tried to answer with a pair of shots on goal. Less than a minute apart, both Peyton Stenzel and Morgan Keirstead picked up shots, but the saves were made by Upper Iowa's Natalie Rudrud. The score would remain quiet until Thoresen scored in the 89th minute.

Starting and playing in the net for the first time this season, freshman Meghan Kuntz faced 17 shots and made six saves. Overall, the Vikings totaled 25 shots, 14 on goal, and took eight corners. Grace Behm had a team-high six shots.

After returning home this week, Augustana will head back on the road for a pair of games next weekend. The Vikings will take on Northern State on Friday, Oct. 12 at 8 p.m., and MSU-Moorhead on Sunday, Oct. 14 at 1 p.m.
