Mankato, Minn.- Entering their final match of the season, Augustana Volleyball traveled to Mankato looking to knock off Minnesota State and end the season on a high note. Ultimately, the Mavericks had other plans as they defeated the Vikings 3-1 (25-22, 17-25, 15-25, 15-25). The loss drops Augustana to 10-18 (5-15 NSIC) on the year and brings Minnesota State to 18-10 (11-9 NSIC).
The Vikings came out swinging in the first set jumping out to a 9-4 lead on a kill from
Grace Haberland forcing a Minnesota State timeout. Midway through the first set Augustana received a kill from
Courtney Place to maintain its lead 15-10. The Mavericks stormed back to tie the set at 20, but the Vikings outlasted them with a kill from Place sealing the victory 25-22.
In set two Minnesota State got out to an early lead, but Augustana got within one at a score of 11-10 on a block from
Abby Benson. The Vikings would tie the set at 15 on a Maverick attack error. However, Minnesota State finished strong to take the second set 25-17.
Set three was all Mavericks as they made their way to a 16-9 lead. A kill from Benson cut Minnesota State's lead to 17-12. This is as close as Augustana would get as the Mavericks prevailed 25-15.
The fourth set picked up where the third left off with Minnesota State leading 16-9 when the Vikings called their second timeout. A Haberland kill kept Augustana within seven at a score of 21-14. The Mavericks finished the fourth and final set strong to claim a 25-15 victory.
The Vikings did out-block the Mavericks tallying nine to the Mavericks seven.
Leading the way the for Augustana was
Courtney Place with 11 kills,
Hanna Justesen with 15 digs, and
Avery Thorson tallied a match-high 33 assists.
The Mavericks were led by Morgan Olson with 19 kills and Mara Quam with 30 digs.
