Augustana Rolls Past Washburn In Season-Opener

Selland has career night in Kansas City

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Behind a career night from senior Shelby Selland, the Augustana women's basketball rolled to a 75-67 win over Washburn (KS) on Friday at the Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Mo.

Selland had an excellent night on the court for the Vikings as the 6-2 center tallied a career high 21 points and 14 rebounds. Augustana moves to 1-0 and Washburn drops to 0-1. Lynsey Prosser added 17 points, four assists and and had a game-high three steals, which is a new career high for the senior.

The Vikings (1-0), got off to a hot start, beginning the contest on an 13-6 run and never looked back. Augustana, which never trailed in the game, led the Ichabods 22-14 after the first quarter.

In the first period, the Vikings shot 50 percent from the field and knocked down three of five from three point land. Prosser connected on two of those shots from behind the arc and scored eight first quarter points with  one assist. Selland sunk the third three pointer for the Vikings and she had nine in the first quarter.

Coming into the second quarter the Vikings put the pedal to the floor and continued to find the bottom of the net, scoring an easy 15 points to take them into halftime with an 11 point lead. Although they only shot 4-16 from the field, they did force five turnovers from the Ichabods. The Vikings finished with 17 points off of turnovers.

Scoring picked up a bit coming out of the intermission, they Vikings tallied 16 more points to their side of the scoreboard, but so did the Ichabods. The Vikings largest lead came in the third quarter, which was a 16 point lead, and it happened when Selland knocked down a three giving her 16 points thus far in the season opener.

Heading into the final 10 minutes of play the Vikings were ahead 53-42, but did not let up. The 22 fourth quarter points pushed the team to their first victory of the season.

Rounding out the scoring column for the 1-0 Vikings was Izzy Van Veldhuizen with nine points, while Camryn Hay and Vishe' Rabb each contributed eight each. .

The Vikings hit the hardwood tomorrow afternoon at 3:30 p.m. when they take on Southern Nazarene (OK)  at the Municipal Auditorium for day two of action.
