WINONA, Minn. -- It was a game that had 11 lead changes and was a dog fight from start to finish, but in a contest where the No. 10 Augustana women's basketball team lead for over 30 minutes of action, the Vikings fell short, dropping a 71-67 decision to Winona State Friday night inside McCown Gymnasium.
Augustana falls to 22-3 overall and 18-3 in the NSIC.
Trailing 29-24, and facing their largest deficit of the game, the Vikings responded with a 12-0 run to end the first half and took a 36-29 lead with them into the locker room at halftime. Senior guard
Logan O'Farrell ignited the run with a 3-pointer from the top of the key to cut the Winona State advantage to just two points.
Lynsey Prosser, a junior out of Sturgis, S.D. gave the Vikings the lead on a triple of her own.
Logan O'Farrell scored the final six points of the first half and poured in a team-high 22 points and eight rebounds for the game.
With 5:45 to play in the third quarter, junior center
Shelby Selland cashed in a 3-pointer to give the Vikings an 11 point lead and capped an 8-0 run. The Letcher, S.D. native finished with 15 points and seven rebounds.
Winona State's Hannah McGlone, who was honored prior to the contest for scoring over 1,000 points in her career, sparked a 6-0 run for the Warriors to pull WSU within 50-45. Rachel Novotny drilled two free-throws to tie the game at 59. It was the first time the contest was tied since it was 7-7 at the 7:06 mark in the first quarter.
A Gabie Doud triple with 45 seconds to play gave Winona State a 66-64 lead.
Logan O'Farrell was fouled going to the rack and drilled two free-throws to tie the game. With just over four seconds to play, Doud talked down a layup, was fouled and gave WSU the lead for good.
The Winona State win snapped a 10 game losing streak and improved the Warriors record to 13-12 overall and 9-10 in the NSIC.
Augustana's
Lynsey Prosser was the third Viking to reach double-figures with 11 points and added three assists.
Augie shot 37 percent for the game but just 15 percent in the fourth quarter. Winona State outscored the Vikings 42-31 in the second half.
Augustana returns to Action Saturday, Feb. 17 when they travel to Upper Iowa to take on the Peacocks at 4 p.m.
