HILO, Hawaii - The Augustana baseball team (3-0) used two comeback victories to get past Hawaii-Hilo (0-3) on Friday night. The Vikings took game one 4-3 and was victorious in game two 9-5.
GAME 2: Augustana 9, Hawaii-Hilo 5
The Viking offense maintained the momentum from game on to propel the team to a doubleheader sweep of the Vulcans.
JT Mix and
Aiden Ladd each made the most of their first career starts, paving the way for the Viking victory. Mix was a perfect four-for-four at the plate with a team-best three RBI and Ladd two-for-four with two RBI and two runs scored.
Riley Johnson recorded his third multi-hit game in as many outings, going two-for-four with two RBI and a run scored.
Dalton Allen got the win going 4 1/3 allowing four hits five runs (two earned) with three strikeouts. Allen record three one-two-three innings.
Jed Schmidt entered in relief and shutdown the Vulcans over 2 2/3 innings striking out four and picking up the save.
Augustana got the scoring started in the second inning, compiling three runs on three hits in the frame. Ladd singled home
Ryan Menssen for the first run of the game. Mix added a RBI single and
Sam Baier had a RBI walk to give the Vikings a 3-0 lead.
Hawaii-Hilo would grab the lead with a four-spot in the bottom of the second, but the Vikings would regain the lead in the top of the third. Mix added to his RBI total with a two-RBI single to second to recapture the lead. Johnson recorded a sac fly giving the Vikings a 6-4 lead through 2 1/2 innings.
After the Vulcans chased Allen with bases loaded and one out in the fifth, freshman Schmidt limited the damage on giving up one run. The Vikings got the run back in the sixth on a RBI triple by
Lucas Barry. Augustana added a pair of runs in the seventh to the game the final score of 9-5.
GAME 1: Augustana 4, Hawaii-Hilo 3
In game one of the doubleheader between the Vikings and Vulcans, it was all Vulcans until the final two innings when the Vikings flipped the script and stole a win in Hilo, Hawaii. Augustana scored three runs in the eighth and a run in the ninth to swipe a 4-3 victory against Hawaii-Hilo.
Hawaii-Hilo jumped out to a 2-0 after a balk and a single in the second. The Vulcans extended their lead to 3-0 with a RBI single, chasing Vikings starter,
Tyler Mitzel, after 3 1/3 innings of work.
Augustana didn't must much for the first seven innings, but broke through in the eighth with a three-run inning to tie the game.
Ryan Menssen put the Vikings on the board with a RBI groundout and
Jordan Barth sent a two-out, two RBI single to center field to tie the game at three.
Zach Reeg entered in the bottom of the eighth in relief and struck out the side to keep the score deadlocked. Augustana took it first lead in the top of the ninth when
Michael Svozil reached on an error and
Nate Crossman scored. Reeg would shut the door in the bottom of the inning to give the Vikings a 4-3 come-from-behind win.
The Vikings bullpen shut down the Vulcans, going 5 2/3 innings limiting Hawaii-Hilo to hits and striking out 10.
Derek Dahlke went 3 2/3 innings with five punch outs and Reeg went two strong, striking out five of the six batters he faced.

Augustana and Hawaii-Hilo will wrap up the four-game series in Hilo, Hawaii at 6 p.m. (CT) at Wong Stadium.
